You might have a defective ac adapter or power related problem on the system board. Go to radio shack and see if they have a tester adapter (most have universal laptop power adapters and you can try in the store to see if this works). If same issue, most like a defective battery or defective system board.
hi i believe what you are facing is as a result of 2 things, the power pack or the motherboard, since you have tried other adapter..i suggest u try opening up the laptop and perceive for burnt smell,..if u cant do it yourself get someone with a bit of experience to help u with it, but definately you will have to replace whichever is faulty
Might as well try to go to BIOS it self , restart computer press F2 and try to clear NVRAM or check if the battery was recognized.

hi, gmotian:i think the battery does't match your laptop,i suggest you buy a new one battery from http://www.adapterlist.com/dell. which is an online shop, exporting various models replacement laptop battery.best luck!
If your HDD will not recognized during installation you need to check if your HDD is detected. Try to look at your BIOS if it is detected. IF the HDD will not detected you need to replace the cable, try to use the other slot of your SATA or IDE ports.
You have either a faulty/worn out battery or a faulty charging circuit.
Recharageable battery have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and over the years the battery life gets shorter and shorter until it is worn out and won't charge any more.
If the battery is more than 2 years old then the battery is most likely worn out and needs to be replaced.
Did you download the latest audio drivers from Dell.com? If not here is the link to the drivers for that device based off Vostro 1400 using Vista 32 bit Edition.
