I think you could
use this manual method instead.. My nephew who is a full time mechanic uses most of the times, and all mechanics look up to manuals. It's very easy he gets it from. www.reliable-store.com

SOURCE: 2004 VW Passat just over

Could be a faulty fuel pump, they are notorious for acting unpredictibly when they start to go bad. My bet is in a week it won't start at all. Try banging on the fuel tank the next time it won't start, if that fixes it it is prbably a fuel pump.

Running you fuel pump until its at E is hard/bad on your fuel pump since gasoline is the fuel pumps lubrication.

SOURCE: 2002 VW Beetle turbo

Ok we figured something out. The turbo model has a rear retractable spoiler that flips up when you go above 45 mph and down when you go below 10. The later models just have a fixed spoiler. Still looking into if it should make that loud 'ratchety' sound.

SOURCE: 2003 VW Golf won't start - battery was charged

You need to charge your battery up more. Either get a battery charger or leave the jumper cables hooked up for a longer period of time.
Your battery was probably completely dead. You might even need a new battery...they really don't like to be completely drained.

I'm sure this problem was resolved LONG ago, but I just had to mention this to anyone else who might be hearing a noise like this. I drive a 2002 Turbo S and I too thought something was seriously wrong with my car day I first bought it. If your car is a Turbo it has a rear spoiler that pops out when you accelerate to about 40mph. It stays out until you stop the car, and makes a LOUD clunking noise when it disengages. The noise is not nearly as loud when you accelerate, but can be startling for those who don't expect it when the car stops. I have only driven the one Turbo with the spoiler, so I can't say whether they all make so much noise, but mine always has.

The light is telling you the gas cap is loose. The noise is coming from the belts? The blower noise is normal. That is your secondary air injection pump.

LOUD RACE CAR NOISES FROM MY 99 VW BEETLE

This seems to be a classic case of "disentegrating exhaust system syndrome." There is either a hole(s) somewhere in your exhaust system or there is a leak somewhere. Probably the easiest way to tell where the noise is coming from is to start your car and just listen around in the engine bay, under the car, and at the muffler. Also do a visual inspection of the exhaust system to see if you can see any holes in the piping. I have also seen hairline cracks in the exhaust header itself that can cause the loud ticking noise that can be a little tricky to track down.
