I purchased the HT-Q40 unit without the five-speaker system that goes with it. I've hooked up the cables directly to my TV, but I'm not getting any sound. Will it not function without the speakers, or does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?
It's part of an HTiB (Home Theater in a Box). Get the speakers that it's designed to mate with. HTIB's are not like components. Due to proprietary connectors and who knows what else under the hood, they are not intended to be mixed and matched with other units.
This unit has standard speaker connections so you might be able to find some speakers to hook up to it, but its original speakers were rated at 3-ohms impedance and the spec for the amp is also at 3-ohms. You probably won't blow anything up trying them, but don't expect earth-shattering volume from typical 8-ohm speakers. As the saying goes, individual results will vary.
How exactly did you expect the TV to be the speakers for this thing? It doesn't have an outbound audio connection. TV's are traditionally the part that makes pretty moving pictures while other electronics and speakers take care of the audio end.
If you need the manual, go to retrevo.com, register, find it using >>> Samsung HT-Q40 <<< and download it for free.
Based on your mention of not having any speakers I assumed you wanted the TV to substitute for them. How would I know you only meant theDVD part?
Atypically, this unit's only TV-related output is for VIDEO. Usually there are associated RCA audio L and R connectors, too. They must think the end user would have a Monitor (no speakers), not a TV, so they saved a buck by eliminating audio out. The design makes sense to people who don't want their money wasted on marginal speakers and sub-standard sound supplied by most TV's.
You will need speakers.

Well, see, TVs tend to have some sort of speakers on their own -- otherwise, you wouldn't be able to hear anything if the TV was functioning on its own, would it?
The piece was sold to me as a standalone, not as a stripped-down HT. Not being the guru you are, I assumed it would would work as any other DVD player -- plug it in and go. My mistake.
So, thanks for the information buried in the smug douchiness. :)
