Watts Onan Portable Generator - 4000 , Model# 5500 Logo
Posted on Jan 31, 2010

Onan Generator stopped working in motorhome because the gas got too low. I blew out the front fuel filter, changed oil and filter, air filter, one spark plug and now it won't start. Is there a fuel shut off valve that automatically stays shut when the gas from the motorhome fuel tank gets below 1/8 tank? No fuel is getting to the front fuel filter of the Onan Genset 400 BHE now and it will not start. Could it be a shut off valve or the fuel filter?

Yes it wil not let you run your motorhome out of fuel they set it up that way so you dont strand yourself you may have a air bubble in the fuel line to the generator try blowing air generator fule line back into the tank

My generator will turn over but wont start

Our motorhome Onan 5000 Marquis generator will turn over and try to start but fails everytime we test. We have primed, gas and oil are fine and we have new spark plugs. We also changed the gas filter on the generator. Any suggestion? Thanks, Loretta

Have a 2.0kva-fr/26119 onan genorator which runs for 5 minutes and stops can you be of any help

If it stops after 5 minutes whether under load or not, and assuming the air filter, plugs, and fuel filter are new and or clean. The fuel pump is suspect. If it is in a motorhome try conencting it to an external fuel source that is at the same height as the generator. Then higher than the generator. If the problem persisits replace the fuel pump. Or just check fuel pump pressure with a gauge. BE CAREFUL do not use an automotive fuel pump Onan have special low pressure pumps, so use OEM part

Generator trouble starting and running rough

ok simple things first, new spark plug, fresh gas, a decent dose of fuel cleaner a bottle doses 12 gallons so say if 3 gallons gas use 1/4 bottle (yes double dose wont hurt) , air filter, try running this first and see if it picks up over time, the methanol gas really crude's up small engines and the cleaner will hopefully clear it up, use fuel stabilizer with ethanol protection and dont let tank sit empty always full to keep moisture to lowest level. if this doesnt work then likely carb is fouled and needs rebuild

Starts easily, run for 5 to 20 minutes and then

If the fuel filter (strainer) is OK, carb gives enough fuel for the load you apply, air filter is dry and clean, your problem may be the low oil level protection.
Check if generator is at level position.
After the oil is distributed in all the engine its level may go less than the measuring sensor level. Try to put some more (not much) oil.
If this will not help your measuring sensor may be bad and switch off when the oil gets hot.
