Now that today's CD-ROMs are 40 and 50 times faster than their progenitors the problem is that they're too fast. Modern CAV (constant angular velocity) CD-ROM drives require a second or two to spin up before they start reading. That's not a problem if you're copying large amounts of data, but if you just want to view a file or two on a CD or play a game from a CD-ROM, that lag can be annoying.
There's still a solution to that problem. Re copy again the cd or burn it again with the help your friend which was it can read by your friend player. Burn / copy it in the slowest speed 32x could be better so that your player can read it now.. A 8x CD-R / CD-RW will do..

There are few reasons that it might not work
Difference of media
Different type of Recorder (that media has been written)
Cleanliness of the lens
Please check the those and post your comments
different DVD media, Like many brands are available, Philips, Kodak, Maxell, Sony etc. Stick the brand that worked fine

Don't understand "different type of media", different recorder". You mean buy a new player since mine can't be repaired
