Take it back to the store - this is a common problem with WD drives and WD are doing nothing to address this issue with their larger drives. Buy another make and you should be trouble free.

you need hard drive formatter this is in disk manager, windows 7 press windows key and then X go to disc manager, in the menu you will find your hard drive and make sure its the right one. and click on format drive, on the folder of the drive.

My western digital HD 500 gig just stopped working. it started freezing thge day before. i got 2 blue screens. and the when i went to start it the next day it wouldn't load. there was a question mark...

Hi,
If you are VERY locky, you can place the drive in another PC and copy the data out. When copying do it in small amounts so you might "isolate" the files affected by the error.
If the drive dont spin, you might be able to start it by removing the lid and give it a little push.
Good Luck!

How to install a western digital 320gb hard drive as master on pcv rx860

You would put the jumper on PINs 5 and 6 as pe image below to have it as master if it is an EIDE (PATA) drive.

MY COMPUTER KEEP SHOW NEW HARDWARE NOT FOUND

you may have not properly set the jumpers on your new installed hard drive.

usually a computer will have 2 eide drive controllers where you would connect a ribbon cable. a ribbon cable has a middle connector and end connector and obviously another end connector that connects to the motherboard)
now you can connect upto to devices to that ribbon cable. most computers will have one device connected to the end connector (the hard drive) and no devices connected to the middle connector or sometimes they may have 2 device on the same cable: the hard drive on the end and a cd/dvd drive on the middle. others computers may have one ribbon cable for each device as computers usually come with 2 drive controllers (so you can connect 2 cables which means a total of upto 4 eide devices)

now, when you connect devices on 1 ribbon cable, the end device is the master device, the one the middle is the slave. to make a device a master or a slave you need to set a jumper. the jumper is usually located in between the ribbon cable connector and the power connector, the legend to know where the jumper goes to make it a slave or a master is usually on the label of the hard drive. you may need to check that label and with some pliers make the proper setting for that jumper.

on a new hd usually the jumper setting will be in master. so if you connected the hard drive on a ribbon cable that already has a master at the end it may not be detected. try to connect that master device on another ribbon cable that has no other devices connected and connect it on the end connector (not the middle one). if you have no other option but to connect it in the middle already having a master device at the end, set the jumper to on the slave position.

while you are at it. make sure you have your power connector and data (ribbon) cable properly seated.

if the caviar hd your are trying to install is an old hd and you know that you have the proper hd configuration and the cables properly seated, it is possible that no detection means hd failure.

Replaced a crashing hard drive that worked a day, now it doesn't

Power supply blocks do weird things. If you can beg borrow or... a power block for your computer (500 watt, eh?), try that before you upend the computer. A power block has fixed MANY issues for me.
Is it possible to test the hard drive on a friend's computer? The store that sold the hard drive can likely test it for you, perhaps for nothing.

It sounds like you may be having a problem with the hard drive interface on the mother board. Try using the second interface. It is very unusual for a modern computer to be unable to detect a hard drive. You HAVE tried a new EIDE cable, right? 80 pin? Place the drive selector in the neutral position (no selection).

Trying to install the drive on my laptop, but it refuses to be seen as anything but the slave drive. How do I switch it to master? It has no jumpers on it.

This is quite strange, since without jumpers you should get a master device, not a slave one. Check with Western Digital 2.5 EIDE jumper sheet:

http://support.wdc.com/images/kb/4-Pin_JumperBlock.JPG

Verify that there are no "stealth" jumpers (small flat ones without the black plastic guard) and that the pins are not bent or shorted.

I need to know how to make model WD102AA-53ANA0 a slave. I am trying to move information on this hard drive.

Generally on a WD the center two pins is where the jumper goes for master with slave present. WD drives usually have it etched in the plastic SL, MA,CS.

Why the eff would I buy a 500 GB and get only 128? if you know it only operates @ 128 smooth why advertise 500? I bought a 500 GB internal to have 500 Gigs. I returned the first one because I thought it...

Your computer may be older that when a 500 gb drive was even thought of, if that is the case you may have to go to the manufacturers support/driver site and download and flash your BIOS to accept the higher GB drives. Most cites have a BIOS updates for their models. Since that information is not included in your explanation, I cannot give you the link, if you want to srite back and include the computer name and model number as well as the operating system, I will try to furnish you with the link for the BIOS update. When you click on the BIOS file make sure the unit has a charged battery and is on AC power.

Maxtor Internal EIDE hard drive dip switch settings.

I assume you have two IDE controllers? IDE1 and IDE2, I'll try to help, the primary HD needs to have the pin set to primary and the secondary set to slave, if you're running both of these drives off of the same ribbon cable. You may have to go into your BIOS settings and check to make sure the Primary HD is the WD drive.

Internal hd ata

If I am right on this one the 4600 can only take a 250gig hd But I was wondering if you could partion the HD to 236.7 gigs twice so the computer only recognizes the 236.7 gig hd you will see two drives in my computer once you do just format both partitions unless you have another hd and then you will see three drives just do the ones you installed or you may loose your operating system, I don't even know if that will work, but I think it is worth a try seems you already have the 500gig drive, can't hurt to try, I sure hope this help some what.,
