The lamp is likely bad .. they only work a few thousand hours .. then must be replaced .. your lamp can cost a couple of hundred (maybe even more if bought locally) .. here is one for less if you have someone handy that can change it.......
http://www.purelandsupply.com/50PL9126D-37-Bulb-Philips-DLP-TV-Bulbs.html
..... of course make sure power is off (unplugged) and make sure things are not hot .. there is usually a little cubby in the back where the lamp is located .. you an see what the lamp looks like at the above URL .. dont get finger prints on the bulb . that will cause it to crack when hot .. if you are unable to change the bulb then a call to philips service should do the trick. make sure you ask what the bulb replacement and labor will cost ..

Black screen and whistles

Sorry to say that it sounds like the high voltage went out on that one. The sound that you hear is probably the high voltage arcing across the flyback transformer. Dont try to make any repairs here. The unit has at least 25,000 volts in there. Even long after it has been unplugged. I'm not sure what size TV that is from the description, but you would be looking at replacing the main deflection board, which may well exceed the value of it.

MX 6124 Gateway notebook screen stays black when powering up

Repaired! This sounde like a fuelty screen or screen inverter. To check this, connect to an external monitor, if the external works properly, then it's the screen or inverter. If the external doesn't work, let me know and we'll run the problem down to a more indepth (internal) trouble shoot.
