Seagate Ex hard drive not responding -light's on but nobodys home

My seagate 1T external hard drive had a I/O error appear, and now I'm fearing it's dead. HOwever when I plug it back into my computer the light turns on, then pulses, but there are no other sounds. Also when I unplug it from my computer but not from the power supply the light still stays on... which is odd. I've used the same cables to plug in my 500G hard drive and that one is working fine. Any ideas?

Try Testdisk. see if it picks up the drive and if so get it to check the boot sector and rebuild it if necessary.

SOURCE: power indication light flashing

Hi, you may want to try connecting it by USB if you're currently using firewire or the other way around and see if it works. If this fails, you are probably better off using diagnostics by Seagate @ http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=7f4e19e0babfd010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD&locale=en-US#. Try to use the Troubleshooting or FAQ or if you feel comfortable using their utilities, download SeaTools. Hope this be of help to you. Good luck.

Sounds to me like you are in a catch 22 situation. It seems that there is an internal problem with the drive and Seagate is willing to replace it but you need your files. The problem is with an internal problem the only possibility of getting your files is to open it up and take out the hard drive that is inside (it would be a standard desktop or laptop hard drive) and connect it to a computer through some other means. If you do this however, the warranty will be void and you will not be able to get the drive replaced. The best way around it that I can see is to get the drive out and buy a different carrier for it. Assuming that the actual drive still works you will get your files and have a working external hard drive. There is no real way to be certain that the drive on the inside is good without opening up the case that it is in.

You can use it, just make sure that the polarities are the same as the original.

SOURCE: New Seagate FreeAgentPro USB eSATA 500GB power on light not glows

Thank you for your reply.

I have solved the problem with local help.

Printed installation manual of Seagate 500 GB eSATA external hard drive has not properly mentioned how to use power on/off switch once connected to mains. I could get local help, who has already used the device. On/Off switch to be pressed for few seconds after mains connected, sometimes it comes automatically once power is on and USB cable pluged to the USB port of PC if power supply is ok. There is no indicator for the power supply (before device glows) after connected to the mains. I was in confusion whether power supply is ok or not.

Finally, It was found that the problem was with mains power supply and I have changed the power socket and adapter.

How to recove Seagate external hard drive data?

Probably, the new operating system cannot recognize your Seagate external hard drive. You can connect the Seagate external hard drive to another computer to copy data to another device. If the problem still exists, you might need to perform data recovery. You can free download the data recovery software: http://www.icare-recovery.com/seagate-recovery/seagate-external-cannot-be-recognized.html

Don't know to transfer my PC hard drive to my Seagate external hard drive (1T)

You can copy paste the contents or cut and paste or right mouse click on contents and click "send to....external drive" Once the contents is on the external drive this can be taken to another PC and copied back. Caution: Some contents can be very LARGE and take a LONG time to be copied! It is advisable to run a BACKUP every now and then. And be sure your external drive is working correctly (Scandisk).

I have a Seagate Free Agent Desktop External Hard Drive. I cannot get any of my computers to access the drive. I fear the drive has crashed.

get linux puppy and boot the cd while your hard drive is plugged in, if you can mount under puppy linux and see your info choose the info you need and offload onto an external usb, copy the files over, dont move them as if disk is corrupt you could lose info, then reformatt the drive, just to let you know there seems to be alot of hard drive issues with seagate lately

Seagate 500gb Free Agent Ex Hard Drive - Class Action siut

DO NOT buy a Seagate freeagent drive under any condition if it comes as a gift return it or re-gift to some one you don't like. Like so many others my 500GB external drive just quit working. Has only been plugged in about 6 times and then back into a cabinet to keep safe. In 10 years between 2 workstations 3 laptops and 4 external drives. The only drives that have ever gone bad are the Seagates and newer Maxators. I still have 4 Western digital drives that still work and get used in an external case for back up. They have never failed. Seagate should be responsible for data time and mental anguish.
