First charge it then try again.
This is important as way too many people have caused problems with theirs by trying to use it while the battery is low.
Also don't try and turn it off while on charge, it needs to remain on during the process or you'll never see the flashing power light to indicate it is charged.
If it goes to sleep on its own that is fine just don't try to help it.
Fully charge the Archos before using it again and then make sure you update the firmware to the latest version.
Good luck!

P.S. Make sure you are recording in "composite" mode and there is always the possible bad cables or connectors, it happens more than you'd think.
Hi. Go into your computers BIOS (F2 during boot or setup during boot) and see if the external monitor settings are set to monochrome. Depending on your BOIS options you should see Monochrome, EGA, VGA, or SVGA as options. Try setting it to either SVGA or VGA.
Hi, Sorry about the mis-interpetation. The manual does little to help you with connections I see.
Check your recording setting
Settings
A number of settings such as resolution and bitrate can be adjusted. Normally you need not change
these settings.
To access these recording parameters, press MENU and select the Settings menu item.
To return to the pre-recording screen, press the ARCHOS device’s button.
Setting the Time Stamp parameter to ‘ON’ will show the date and time on the recorded image.
Note: For information on the other settings, please refer to the section on making a video recording in the user manual of your ARCHOS device.
Please note that the parameter Format does not exist as the setting is pre-determined by the camera. For the same reason, the parameter Source can only be set to ‘Composite’ or ‘Black & White’.
I think you may need to select composite.
I think the actual connections you need are part of the DVR travel pack adapter.
Here is the 160GB manual... as far as I know all the menus are the same.

I found your Docking station Manual (Ver 4 per your unit being a 504). Sure hope this resolves your connection / setting problem. At least all of the connections are shown in the 44 page manual.

Good luck and let us know if this solves your problem. Thanks for using Fixya!

You probably have corrupted files on the device, if you have windows media player, probably its the one that has created the corrupt files. try locate and delete them, also use another media player.

Ok, let me direct you to this user manual. and please dont hesitate to contact me for any further help.
Kind regards
ok now here we are, Iam assuming thats your player inserted into the docking station.
Plug Archos portable media player into the station, and prepare to
get up close and personal with the back end of your television.
For input connections, this docking station features an analog
stereo audio input, both a composite and an S-video input, inputs for both A
and miniB USB connectors, an IR remote control, a serial port, and a DC power
input.
For outputs, this docking station has both an analog stereo and a
SPDIF audio output for 5.1 channel surround sound (you must download an MPEG-2
software plugin to your Archos player to use this feature), a component video
output, an S-Video output, an RGB (S), and a YPrPb video output, and an AV switch
output.
I hope this solves your problem.
Regards

The only movies I have on my archos are those I previously recorded from my old tv and dvd player - I have not used windows media player. Do you have any advice on actually connecting the docking station to the tv (dvd player integrated into the tv) as it doesn't seem to be connecting properly and I can't find the crib sheet that came with the docking station
I have an aechos 504 and a docking station. I have recently purchased a new tv and when I tried to connect the docking station, I am not getting a proper connection. Anything from the archos that I view on the tv is only in black and white, and when I try to record from the tv or the integral dvd player, I get a graphic that shows no connection.
I have lost the diagram that came with the docking station and am looking for some advice on the correct way to connect it to the tv so that I can get full functionality from my archos.
Karin
I have the archos user manual - it does not explain how to connect the docking station correctly which is where I have a problem
Thanks
K
Thanks - I'll try tonight - fingers crossed
The problem is not on the computer - I have tried to connect the docking station to my tv so I can record but it isn't working - those films I have I can only see in black and white and when I try to record I get a graphic showing no connection to the archos. I think the problem is in the connection wiring but I've tried every combination I can think of with no luck.
It worked fine on my old tv after a bit of playing around but I can't find the diagram that came with the docking station to get it going with my new tv.
Thanks - I'll try that tonight and let you know
Fingers crossed - thanks for your help
