Loud hum and then an even louder grinding noise that sounds like something in a fan...Samsung hl r6167w

First thing to look at is the color wheel this model uses--usually it will make a high pitched fan like sound but can make a grinding sound also.

If it slows down from the 12,000 or so RPM speed it will cause color issues.

Another possible source for the noise is the Color Wheel. It is spinning at a high rate and the noise will get louder as it wears out. You should be able to replace the part yourself. Take a look here first: http://www.fixya.com/support/t372149-samsung_hlp4663w_color_wheel_replacement

sounds like you need a new lamp

Your color wheel needs to be changed. Mine just did the same thing. I changed mine, and the buzzing sound went away, however now my picture washes out with light or yellow colors. The darks look green and purple also.

check for bad color wheel....may sould like a grinding sound

You may not see any deterioration in the picture when the color wheel begins to go bad. The noise will get louder and eventually, it will shut down or the wheel will shatter while the motor continues to spin. If that happens, you'll have a black and white picture.

If its a Samsung DLP that is mercury vapor lamp driven, its a safe bet the color wheel is going bad.

Sounds like the color wheel has shatterd, thats a fairly common problem with that model.
