Earphones wont work on dell computer/vistas have to restart computer to go from sound to earphones . how do i fix this

if the operating system is vista or Win7 then go to sound then under that u will see speakers then click on speakers and then click on Set as Default. This should fix it .

Check if sound from laptop speaker is working.

If sound from laptop speaker is not working, go to control panel, check first the audio properties, and ensure that the sound is not muted.

On Vista you have to double click on the playback device to get properties.



audio properties can also be explored starting the mixer by clicking the audio icon located near to the clock.In the example below the audio is muted:




In control panel also check if there is an installed audio device going to device manager.




If the audio adapter is not present , or if the audio adapter has a yellow mark on top, then you will need to reinstall the audio adapter drivers. The drivers are available online, on the laptop manufacturer's website.

On HP, Acer and several other brand models there is also a bag that can affect the use of headphones only.

In that case when you plug in the headphones, you get no sound, or the sound is still reproducedd through the laptop speakers.
The trick to fix this bug is restarting the laptop with the headphones plugged in twice, then removing headphones and restarting again.

If all the above does not work there may be an hardware fault, like a broken contact in the audio jack soldering joints.

You need to reinstall your sound-card drivers. You can do this two ways one use your sound-card install disk or go to the internet and look for updated drivers. I have had this same issue with XP so its not just a Vista issue.

check your sound card ,,do u have sound threw the pc speakers.if so bad head phones.or not compatable with your pc.

check the driver first.. then the setting of microphone.. os xp or vista...

somtime for this model is problem from the hardware.. i have a lot of customers problem this always hardware after repairing the hadware is working properly...

but try first the software befer hardware...

it doesen`t do that on my computer either but i still get sound

The Solutions that will mostly work :

1) Go to sleep mode - wake up ! - tada !! the headphone jack will work again .. I know it sounds crazy.. i have the same model and had the same problem.. usually restarting solves any problem, but this time even a restart did not worked while putting the laptop on standby(sleep) mode and waking it up worked !!

2) If the above does not work, uninstall the sound drivers from device manager - restart the computer - then let windows detect appropriate drivers by itself. Sometimes the Sigmatel drivers(which are provided by dell) do not work as well as windows vista's HD sound drivers. May solve the issue... Do not worry doing this, in the worst scenario you can always download and reinstall the dell drivers from dell support page.

I found many references to this issue but I am not sure which may apply to your problem. Here is a set of steps to follow from another site: (Assumes Vista and Realtek)

• Open Vista’s Control Panel (Window | Control Panel)
• Open the Realtek Audio Manager (not “Sound”)
• In the navigation bar in the far right, there is a little yellow folder icon. It is just below “Device advanced settings” and above “ANALOG”. Click the folder icon.
• Click “Disable front panel jack detection” so that a yellow check mark shows up. Hit “OK”, and close the Realtek HD Audio Manager. That should re-enable the sound.

all vista software goes of the market on the 11th april 2017 and it wont be avaible to restall it any more as microsoft wont allow this to happen ,,,,,,,,,sorry as i have vista and i will loose so much of my computer too on that day
