Instructions for Windows XP

  1. Click Start and then Control Panel
  2. In Control Panel, if you are in Category View, click on Switch to Classic View (top left corner)
  3. Open Regional and Language Options.
  4. Click on the Languages tab.
  5. Under Text services and input languages, click on the Details button.
  6. Under Installed services, click Add.
  7. In the Add Input Language dialog box, choose the input language and keyboard layout or Input Method Editor (IME) you want to add.
  8. Click OK twice. You should now see a language indicator in the System Tray (located at bottom right hand corner of the desktop by default). You can switch between different input languages (= keyboard languages) by pressing the Alt + Shift keys
If a language does not appear in the Input language list, the fonts for that language might not be installed. If that is the case, follow the instructions below.

Trying to change the language from French to English. I can't get to the control panel as this is the initial set up when first opening the computer. everything is in french on the set up...

You can't change it with control panel.

You can change it using a MUI (Multilingual User Interface) from Microsoft ®.

Windows 7:

How do I change from French keyboard?

Start / Settings / Control Panel / Regional and language options, check you have the language you want in there, then remove the additional (French) language.

This assumes you're running Windows XP. Vista or Windows 7 will be similar.

What have I hit that is giving me french letters instead of english?

Not sure on that one but, go to your control panel and reset language to english. Also do this for key board if your key board has a language setting. Then you will be up and running again.

Chose Canadin French instead of Canadian English by accident

Hello,
Yes you are right: it is a one time option. You can however install other languages. You will switch from the Canadian French keyboard to the US or English Canadian keyboard by pressing Shift Alt. You will console yourself if I told you that I type mainly in French, but the physical keyboard is US and I cannot even use the Alt + Ascii code to put the accents where due, because the laptop does not have numeric pad.

Hope it helps.

Question mark key always comes up as a french letter e -

I use 2 different keyboard types too.
Have you tried pressing [Ctrl]+[Shift] to change the keyboard type you are in. Even if you choose a default language in a program all other program will still use the other keyboard type, hope this helps.

Chose french windows instead english windows by accident and need to change it

Open Regional and Language Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Clock, Language, and Region and then clicking Regional and Language Options.
Click the Keyboards and Languages tab.
Under Display language, choose a language from the list, and then click OK.
Obviously you'll have to work out the French equivalents of the options but should be fairly obvious
