Hello my friend, you need to know that your motherboard supports card in a PCI Express X16 v1.0a that means that you can buy any card you want but the new cards are v2.0-2.1 so maybe will work on your motherboard but your motherboard will limit their bandwidth and probably if you want a new card for gaming you will need and power supply if you have less that 450W.So you understand that changing a graphic card and have good perfomance have a lot of factors(motherboard, powersupply,a good cpu) but if you want just to upgrade your card to a little better without the need change anything else (or if you have a good power supply) i recommend you Radeon HD 4850 For ~$110 or if you looking for something cheaper Radeon HD 4670 For ~$65

Does the MSI K8n NEO4 Platinum SLI motherboard support the Geforce GTX 550 Video Card?

The MSI K8N NEO 4 Platinum Edition mobo, has an AGP graphics expansion slot. (Accelerated Graphics Port)

It uses AGP graphics cards that are either 4X, or 8X. (Supports 1.5 Volt AGP graphics cards, hence 8X)

http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K8N-Neo-Platinum.html#/?div=Detail

Click on the Specification tab. Look under the bold - Slots - subheading.

(Overview, { Which is the tab it automatically opens to}, Specification, Download, Support, News and Awards, Where to Buy )

This is Evga's version of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 550,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625

Click on the Details tab. (Overview, Details, Feedback)

Under the bold - Interface - heading, and to the right of the subheading - Interface, we see the interface is - PCI-Express 2.0 x16.

Tells you a lot right off the bat, if you know what you are looking at.

1) The graphics expansion slot you need on your motherboard, is a PCI-Express x16 slot.

You have an AGP graphics expansion slot. (That uses either 4X, or 8X AGP graphics cards)

2) The PCI-Express technology used is PCI-Express 2.0

Therefore the answer is No, Stephen.

[ More info on AGP graphics technology, and PCI-Express technology,

1) AGP:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGP

2) PCI-Express:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

Now if someone asks you, why the GeForce GTX 550 graphics card will not work on your motherboard, you can explain why in detail, instead of just saying some dude/dudette on FixYa, said it will not work.

Are you sure some 'Mom and Pop' computer store will not trade out, a decent AGP graphics card, for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 you have?
Always worth a shot. Just MHO.

Ram problems...msi k8n neo4 platinum and have 2X Corsair CMX1024-3200PT 1GB and 2X Kingston KVR400X64C3A/1G. I can get each pair to work dual channel 400mhz but when I install the secound pair no matter...

You will need to manually set the ram speed, in the BIOS to 333MHz as the board does not support 400MHz in dual channel mode. Also, the slot lay out is every other slot, so you need to put one brand of RAM in slots one and three, then the other brand in slots 2 and 4. The 3GB maybe incomparability in using two different brands. I had this exact board and it was very finicky with RAM. I know DDR is expensive, so you may be stuck with 3GB, but I'd expect some errors. You see, each brand may have different timings the old BIOS cannot pair up between the brands, causing a conflict and causing you to lose out on 1GB of RAM.

Check the manual pages 2-7 and 2-8 for memory configurations.you can get the manual from here: https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/K8N_Neo4_Platinum_PCB_1.0#down-manual

1long 2 short beeps, No POST/Visual display

Hi there
One Long and Two Short Beeps = Video (Mono/CGA Display Circuitry) issue.
If you are using a PCI Express graphics card remove it and use the on-board VGA/DVI port
If it is the on-board graphics you are using clear the cmos
d015d7b.jpg<<<<< you will see in the picture a plastic jumper (in this case coloured green), move it to the other position and hit the on/off button, then put it back in its original position and power up the machine again. Hopefully the issue will have been sorted.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Msi k8neo4 platinum mainboard pci express support

No. There is no software to change pci-e speeds. You would need a board already set up for pci-e2 to get the top speeds. Most pci-e2 graphics cards are backwards compatible but they will run at the slower speed. Hope this helps.

4gb on msi k8n neo-4 F

Hello pejegess,

If your OS is reading the 4Gb, it will be running the 4GB even if the bios is only seeing 3GB. You may just need to update the firmware on your motherboard but I suggest that you just leave it as is since the OS is recognizing the 4GB.

Sincerely,

Agent Xiong

NX7800GTX-VT2D256E and MSI K8N Neo4/SLI

What's the specs on your power supply. For SLI you need a good quality 500W+ PSU with lots of current on the 12V rails. Remember that all the drives, memory, fans, cpu, etc will use a lot of power, if there is not enough capability in your PSU, the voltage may drop low enough to stop it starting up.
