Have the Nikon D90 camera and it does not allow me to take pictures when ever I want. It is in full auto mode and just does not want to take the picture even in bright day light. The F keeps on blinking in full auto mode and even if I switch to manual mode it does not allow me to change settings. It is very frustrating! what is wrong with this D90??

Remove the lens, clean the contacts, then reattach the lens and jiggle it gently. Does this make any difference?

SOURCE: Nikon D90 that does not want to shoot pictures

The camera may not be sensing that a lens is attached. Try removing the lens completely and then attaching it again securely.

D90 wont shoot in auto mode. gives me r21 error. Manual mode works fine

Did you switch the Focus-mode selector to MF?
It is the switch with number 8. Perhaps you are used to switching on the lens, but on the body is also a switch. Normaly used for the older AF lenses.

HOW DO I SET MY CAMERA TO AUTO FOCUS

The D90 has three different autofocus modes. In the AF-S mode it will not shoot until it has focused. In the AF-C mode it will shoot when you press the shutter release button even if has not focused. In the AF-A mode the camera switches between the AF-S and AF-C modes so either can apply. Also, bear in mind that the camera doesn't really know what you're taking a picture of. It may focus on something other than your subject. If you're in the single-area AF mode then you control which of the eleven focus points the camera uses. In any of the dynamic-area AF modes the camera decides. For full details on how the various modes work, please consult your manual. You might also check out the Nikon D90 video tutorial.

Hi Annette,

The Nikon D90 will take pictures with many older lenses, however there are some problems with using these lenses. Most of the time, they will not auto focus and many depending on type lens may not work in any mode other than "M" (manual). No P, A, S, AUTO or any of the "Scene" modes.

Set to "M" (manual)

You will have to set the exposure values (aperture & exposure time) and focus manually. Ken Rockwell has compiled a list of lenses that may help you learn more about using older lenses with your D90.

D90 AF assist light doesn't come one in M mode???

Check to see whether you're set for AF-C in M, A, and P modes. The AF assist doesn't light in AF-C. Auto mode automatically selects AF-S, so the AF assist would come on then.

Why is there a delay?? Nikon D90

Sounds like you turned on Exposure delay mode (menu d10). This is similar to the "locking up the mirror" (or somethign) feature on canons.

YOu only need it when you doing a tripod shot with long exposure and you want to minimise absolutly all possibility of shake from the camera its self. Lifting the SLR mirror will cause small shake. Generally you can turn this off (i've felt it ona few times my accident and been confused for a second)
