The camper is five years old. Yes the bypass is in the correct position.

The red light has never come on before for electric or gas operation. The unit does spark and egnite the gas but it only stays on for a few seconds. It will do this for three times, then the red light comes on and stays on until I try to start it again. Then the unit goes through the same progress. Then the electric does not heat the water up at all. Yes I have a multimeter. I tried going direct through removing the thermal cut off switch it still does the same thing. I will check to see if there is a reset button as mentioned above. Could this have something to do maybe with the power supply? Thank you for the info. Maybe this will fix the problem.

Couple of questions, sorry. Is this a new RV for you? Are you sure by-pass is in proper position?

Normally the red light stays on for hydro operation, so within 1/2 hr or so you should have hot water. Red light on gas means problem lighting. A few things to check. Make sure switch at back of water heater is on as well as breaker in panel, for hydro operation.
As far as gas side goes, try going outside and drop cover down, and pull the connectors of and on a couple of times at the spark module, just to make sure you have clean contact, and have someone try switch after, and let me know if it's at least trying to spark. If still not working, there should be a thermal cut-off switch in the brown wire running to center area of water heater to the thermostat, and ECO. ( where square piece of black foam covers them) That thermal cut-off has a clear plastic sleeve over it. Take that out of the circuit. Simply pull it apart at both ends, and then connect wire from spark module directly to THERM/ECO, where it was before.( your just eliminating that piece, and going direct.) See if it lights now, and let me know. Do you have a 12 volt test light, or multimeter? Also, with it turned off, take your finger and push in between spade connectors on the THERM, and ECO, and make sure there isn't a little reset in center that has tripped.

Try shutting water heater off, and clean ends of electrodes real good with a piece of steel wool, or emery cloth, but be careful not to crack porcelain while doing it. Also make sure that the electrode is in front of the flame enough to sense the flame. Gap between electrodes should only be about 1/8". Your electrode acts as an ignition source, as well as a sense source. meaning after it ignites the gas, it senses for the flame, and if it doesn't sense that flame, it shuts gas off. Also, try removing connector on ignition board, and clean contacts on board with the eraser on a pencil, to make sure they are good and clean.
As far as electric side goes, if you've checked breaker at panel, and switch at back of water heater and made sure they are in proper position, then the cover will have to come off at back of water heater, to check power to element. Please be careful to make sure power is off when removing that cover. One other thing I'd like you to check, is put your hand on pressure relief valve on water heater, and see if it feels warm, hot, or cold.

You didnt indicate whether the switch was defective or not. From looking at the image, it appears that the identified conductor (white) was cut. Have you tried to reconnect the wire (white to white) and see if the heater is working?

Gas works fine -gets hot water. But electric will not give hot water, only cold. How do you remove the heating element? It is on the inside of trailer in a black box? Model GC6AA-10E Atwood.

I'm thinking when you say black box, that you also have a wall switch with a symbol like a lightning bolt and you switch that on as well as checked breaker panel to make sure breaker is on as well.
With that said, you'll have 2 of 3/8" nuts holding that black cover on. Remove top one and loosen bottom one and pull cover off. ( Be sure power is off to unit while doing this.) You'll find the element in behind it. Put a voltmeter on black to element (red probe or alligator clip) and (black probe) to ground where you see green wire connected to tank. Turn breaker on then switch at wall. You should hear a relay click and 120 Volts should show at black wire ( red probe) . If you've got 120 volts there, shut off all power, drain water heater and replace element.

Hi I have a elec/gas GC6AA-10E atwood works fine on gas and power but lock-out light not working. Have tested light and woking fine, tested for 12v reading from blue wire out of unit but no reading. Any...

Here's test procedure from atwood service manual.
To test Lamp track:
Place negative lead of the multi-meter to ground (green
wire) track of edge connection and positive lead of the
multi-meter to lamp (blue wire) track of edge
connection. If no continuity, this indicates blown lamp
track. Circuit board will still fire unit but lamp light will
not come on. This is caused by a short in the blue wire
between the unit and the switch. Wiring must be
corrected before the board is replaced.

I have an Atwood model GC6AA-10E and the water is not hot enough on either gas or electric. Is there any temp adjustment on this unit?

Your 2 separate thermostats are pre-set so adjustment isn't possible although you can purchase a hotter thermostat. Normally the complaints I get are that propane is not hot enough, but electric is too hot, so I'm wondering if perhaps you haven't got a valve at by-pass in wrong position, or defective that may be allowing cold to mix with the hot. Make sure any valve in between hot (top line) and cold line (bottom) are all the way in off position. You want flow in to bottom open, and out the top open, and anything else in between, shut off. Have you actually tested a cup of hot water from tap to see what temperature it is? I just don't see both thermostats as being faulty at same time, but?

Have a atwood GC6AA-10E water heater it will not work on electric or gas

If you've been using it in past on hydro then it should be on, unless someone had a reason to shut it off, like winterizing or something. You normally find it on the side of that cover, but may be on top. Hard to see it usually to confirm it's on, so I grab a small mirror and flashlight . Are you familiar with a multimeter and do you have one or access to one?

Does yours have the little cut-out diode looking thing in the plastic jacket installed between power wire and thermostat? If yes, remove it from the circuit and connect female spade of wire, to male spade of thermostat,(just removing it to by-pass it) and try it now. Let me know what happens.
