Place the tray into the coffee maker without the basket and run one cup of coffee
Replace the basket into the tray. It will now fit.
It worked perfectly! I couldn't believe it was so simple! THX AS
I was afraid my E8 was gone for good until I found this. It was exactly the same problem I had, and the solution was so elegantly simple. Why can't the manufacturer post gems like this on their website, instead of telling us to make sure the machine is plugged in or that there is water in the tank? Thank you, sciccarella, wherever you are.

I emptied the coffee tray (3 parts) and tried to place everything back in normally. The grounds basket and the tray went only partially in - they wouldn't shut completely and wouldn't come out !! A black flap from the top of the basket was preventing the basket from going fully back into the machine or being pulled out. The tray and grounds basket was simply stuck in between! I thought my life was over as the machine was our wedding gift from my mother-in-law!
So I called the helpline - where the tray goes into the machine at the bottom, there are two small square-shaped holes or square-shaped space for insertions into the machine on the right side.
they told me to push in a pen into the hole right next to the tray (left hole of the two holes).
My pen had to be pushed fully in before the tray could be pulled out.
The basket was still stuck until I pushed back the black flap on the top with my fingers.
Once everything was out, you're then told to make a coffee with just the tray and without the grounds basket. After this coffee-making cycle, you can then place the grounds basket in as per normal with the tray. And it everything fits well!
Phew!!! What a day!!!
