My old Tristar canister vac.

Check the connections of the wires going to the power nozzle and where it plugs into the canister

You weren't specific about what kind of dyson canister it was but I had same problem with mine and fixed it by running a broom handle or a hanger I can't remember and also checked and washed the filter also how old is it

If you have another vacuum handy (such as a shop vac), put your shop vac hose onto the exhaust and direct it into your other vacuum. Some vacuums allow you attach something to the exhaust, but many have abandoned this very handy design feature. Sometimes a broom handle works too. Where in the hand unit is it stuck?

It sounds like you have a blockage somewhere and the air is not passing over the motor to keep it cool. There is usually a thermostat mounted either on or near the motor. The blockage can be anywhere from the elbow ( the swivel part of your carpet sweeper if you have a canister vac) up thru the hose.If you have a canister vac, use a broom handle to push through the hose to clear the blockage. DO NOT ! use a coat hanger or anything that will cut or tare the hose. There are electrical wires in it that have 120 volts and causes quite a shock !

If you have an upright vac, start with the duct hose that comes from the part with the brush up to the hose and on to the main canister of the vac
If this does not work, take your vac to a reputable vac shop for repair. Hope this helps,

These problems are nearly exclusively caused by a bad circut board and replacing it is the fix. Bad boards can cause many different effects so its nearly impossible to be sure. The 9v signal wire is not enough to short out an entire unit so it is unlikely the hose. If it is a direct connect system and you are pulling power from the 110 somehow that would cause main unit problems but that is unlikely at best. Sounds like a failed board to me.

It sounds like you have bad carbon brushes on the motor. Get replacement brushes from a local vac shop, and take the unit apart. On each side of the motor their is a retangular piece of plastic with what looks like magnets in them. In most cases they are simply held by 2 screws. Replace these brushes and reasemble the unit. If the problem persists you have burned out the comutator on the motor and the whole thing must be replaced.

Most units of this type make steam by heating water that is placed in a canister. Other than the place you attach the "hose", there should be only one other place on the body of the unit that opens up... that's most probably where the water goes in. Put water into a measuring cup, graduated cylinder, filling to known point. Then pour water into unit until 1/2" below fill hole. Note on measuring cup how much you used. This is the unit's capacity. Put "lid" or "cap" back on, plug unit into wall and wait a little while. Voila! Steam.

Model 116 hose clog?

My old canister model 116 followed with numbers 2839580 marked Kenmore 3.9 with power-mate, worked fine until the bag got overly full. I have changed the bag, cleaned the filter, and removed a nasty hair/fur/dust clog :-p from the lower metal tube of the power mate. It now has very weak suction and won't pick up anything. I suspect a clog in the grey plastic flexible tubing attached to the canister but cannot get it apart. Advice?

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Kenmore 22313 Bagged Canister Vacuum. The best way to find a clog in an electric hose is to use a steel ball or a large marble to place inside the hose and to let it so threw as far as it can to determine where the hose clog is. Once you have determined where the hose clog is then you can use a small end of a broom handle of take an old wire coat hanger and place a hook on the end and try to pull the clog out of the electric hose – the electric hose is very expensive so try not to damage the hose in any way, shape or form. Or another way is that id you have another canister vacuum you can try to pull the clog apart by using two vacuums turned on and running. If you are successful then run the round marble or steel ball thru the hose again and the clog should be cleared.
