Solution:

1. Turn on the machine
2. Press MENU
3. Press SCAN COPY SCAN to enter service mode
4. USE > to got to NVRAM ACCESS
5. Set ABS-M LEVEL to 0
6. Set ABS-P LEVEL to 0
7. Press STOP to EXIT

Reset error 5B00 on Canon MX300
first enter in service mode:
1. Power off the printer.
2. Holding the stop/reset button, press and hold power button also. Hold both buttons together for 5 secs.
3. Still holding the power button, release the stop/reset buton, then press the stop/reset button twice.
4. Release power button (the screen should now say 'Service Mode').

then you can reset printer:

Press the stop/release button four times. The indicator light will shift between power and alarm each time.
Place a sheet of paper in the sheet feeder.
Press power - wait for the printer to feed the sheet through.
Power off.

Restart the printer and check - all should be well.
