Darryl - lift up the top part of the scanner body (the silver part should separate from the black base) and let the kick-stand support the top part. Then look underneath the top part; there'll be a green tab sticking down from the top. If you look closely, you'll see little icons next to it that look like padlocks, one in an unlocked position and one in a locked position. Push the green tab away from you so that it lines up with the unlocked padlock, and that should do the trick.
I read several post on the issue "unlock scanner" with no luck. Here's what worked for me... - turn off or unplug the printer - remove the two screws underneath the control panel cover. - gain access to the scanner device area' - remove two screws underneath the control panel be careful not to break the clips - Move the scanner slightly to the middle. - Close the printer and turn on the scanner again.

To unlock your Radio Shack Pro-70 Scanner, you can try the following steps:
Turn off the scanner by pressing and holding the "Power" button until the scanner turns off.
Press and hold the "Func" button while turning on the scanner again. Keep holding the "Func" button until the scanner finishes its power-up routine and the display shows "Program."
Use the number buttons to enter the four-digit unlock code. If you don't know the unlock code, try entering "0000," which is the default code for many Radio Shack scanners.
Press "E" to confirm the code. If the code was entered correctly, the scanner should now be unlocked and you should be able to access all functions.
If the above steps do not work, try resetting the scanner to its factory defaults. To do this, turn off the scanner, then press and hold the "2," "9," and "MAN" buttons while turning on the scanner again. Keep holding the buttons until the scanner displays "Factory Test." Press the "Func" button to confirm the reset.
If none of these steps work, it's possible that there is a hardware issue with the scanner and it may need to be serviced or replaced.

Please ensure that the scanner is unlocked. The scanner lock is situated under the scanner bed towards the left. To unlock the scanner, please lift the scanner bed and push the red switch towards the back of the machine. Please try scanning again and let us know the results.

The scanner lock is used to keep the printer from being damaged when it is being shipped. To unlock it, just open the printer and push the scanner lock down. When you lift up the scanner unit, (like what you do to get to the cartridges) the scanner lock is on the left of the underside of the scanner unit.
