Slept on my Aspire BY ACCIDENT cracked display. After installing new one,
my laptop will not boot with video? cable plugged into inverter. When it does
boot, screen is black. Not dim, dead.
External display works but touchpad dead. Went to a technician and changed the data cable three times, the inverter three times, and the LCD three times in all combinations. Screen never lit and laptop only powered on with inverter unplugged. No image ever on any screen.
Anything we missed? It does work on external monitor.

Sounds like an inverter problem. If the power supply is internal replace the capacitors coming out of the voltage regulators. These are usually 1000mf and/or 470mf. If that doesn't do the trick look up the numbers on the 8-pin chips that drive the secondary transformers on the inverter to see if they are getting the right voltages.

After trying everything else I ran a continuity check on the inverter and one flaw, enough for me. I don't know if its a fuse/diode right before the exit to the backlight or coming in from monitor plug into inverter that first piece runs a line to it and after but not through the resistor. Regardless I now believe you are correct, but one problem lingers. If inverter bad why didn't I see anything on screen? Do you think I have a dead lcd display as well. I was just going to try inverter first. Thoughts?

I was able to restore computer where it would power up with inverter connected, and got back my touchpad. I took your advice, divine inspiration, replaced the inverter with a new one, used with dozens of makes/models, as 'Thank You Acer' would not provide a part number "we only keep our own inventory numbers"-tech support.
The sound is back, the laptop switched device manager profiles from two default monitors to one default & one pnp. However it changed control panel display from monitor 2 not installed to monitor 2 disabled, monitor 1 now being external.Will not let me switch, keyboard shortcut for monitor switch causes external to go blank for a few seconds and returns, no life in lcd.
tried many manual bits of advice but still stuck. Guru, share your wisdom before we know how far an Acer can be thrown.

Aside: emailed Acer online support; response, "we do not provide support to end users(?), and as we do not consider the display a user serviceable item, we can not help as we do not have the schematics for the computer. Try calling the monitor manufacturer they should help"-Acer tech Agent 07, I asked for the Taiwan phone number and Agent 07 suggested I call Acer tech supports 800 number- but you just told me you won't help. Neither did 800 tech support. They told me to call Microsoft. Microsoft told me to call the manufacturer and after sending Acer Agent 07 reply he said "I thought they were a good company".
They buy Gateway, become #4, so why do they discontinue models seems like within weeks after release? They are inexpensive but you get what you pay for,
