There is no speed adjust, but 1st you must know the source of the slow down. Remove the belt from the motor pulley and run it, if it goes fast try turning the hand wheel if it is stiff the machine needs clean and oil. If it turns freely you motor may be dirty or just slow. If dirty, sometimes you can without the blet attached run it at full speed for 10 to 15 minutes. It should get faster as you run it. If not motor is weak or slow needs replace. Just replacement motor as genuine probably no longer available.

What is the bulb for the 258 singer sewing machine

Singer has the parts list for the 258 on their support site: http://www.singerco.com/support/replacement-parts-chart . The direct link is http://parts.singerco.com/CPpartCharts/2_2999/258.pdf . The lamp is shown on page 6. The part number is 603938-001 or 603938-002 (Light L 11) depending on if the machine's motor is UL or Standard. Amazon has a couple of vendors that list the 603938 bulb. One of the vendors is http://www.amazon.com/Singer-Long-Light-Watt-120-Volt-Push-In/dp/B0001DUOSY .

I hope this helps.

Will the bed plate from any other singer machine fit the 258 from 1974? I can't seem to find the 258 bed plate anywhere.

Did you contact support at Singer? Did you google it? Did you check with a sewing machine repair outlet?

I have a Singer 7462 and when I try to load a bobin, the machine makes a nasty grinding noise and the needle slowly moves up and down and ultimately all of the lights on the stitch selection panel flash...

Ok, this is pretty common. Disengage the machine (as if you were winding a bobbin) run the machine at high speed for 5 minutes.
The motor is dirty and this will clean it out. You should hear the pitch of the motor change as the minutes go by.

My machins slows to a stop

We had the slow issue and it was the foot pedal. But, rather than replace the pedal I disassembled it, cleaned it, then found a little adjustable pot (resistor). I used a tiny screwdriver to adjust the pot and the speed increased. I noticed that there is a slot in the bottom of the pedal housing that is for accessing the pot without disassembling the pedal. My wife sewed a dress after the repair and so far it is working as it used to.
