Will replacing the car battery clear the computer chip?

I have a 2001 Saturn SC2 with 4cyl engine and manual transmission. It needs a new battery. If I remove the old battery and install a new one myself, will that ''clear'' the computer chip? If so, is there a way I can prevent that? I've heard about a 9 volt device that plugs into the cigarette lighter. Would that work?

No, it will not clear the computer. You can safely replace you battery and not worry about the computer chip being cleared. This will no more erase the memory from the computer in your car than unplugging a computer will erase the hard drive on a PC. The ECU memory is programmed in and will not be erased. It may erase the radio code & presets and require you to insert it again but that is all.

Engine stalls when turning on the air conditioner

The ac puts a strain on the engine anyways but if it stalls there must not be enough voltage to run everthing.could be the alternator or weak battery.

My 2001 saturn won't go into reverse, it engine is on but nothing happens

take to any repair shop which has a lift. ask them to check the transmission linkage. they do this by moving the the linkage while someone watches from underneath. if the linkage is good, then you need to go to a transmission shop and get an estimate.

Does a saturn sl1 2001 have a single or double transmission?

An SL1 has a single overhead camshaft, SOHC, engine. It has but one transmission. If it has a clutch pedal next to the brake pedal, it is a manual shift/transmission, if there is only a brake pedal, then it is an automatic transmission.

Will a 95 saturn 1.9 manual transmission bolt to a 98 saturn 1.9 automatic transmission?

This is the automotive equivalent of a ***-change operation. In short, dont do it...
The problem you have is not if the tranny will fit (which it won't as a direct bolt-in replacement), the problem is in everything else that needs to be moded. Your engines computer is not programed to recognize or work with a manual tranny. You would need to modify the console to accept a manual shifter, install a clutch and clutch pedal assembly, plumb the needed fluid systems, and replace the entire wiring harness in the engine bay. In short, if you are asking - this won't go well and even if it did work, the car would not be reliable. By the time you spend everything involved in this project, it would be much cheaper to buy a 95 or 98 Saturn with the transmission that you prefer.

Need to add transmission fluid and computer has locked up so car won't start

Pour the fluid down the same hole the dip stick uses unless its a standard then you have a different problem. To reset the computer take the negative cable off the battery for about 10 minutes.
