My dryer will run for about 30 seconds then kick the breaker off and smells like something is burning. could this be a belt going bad and putting excessive drag on the motor?

That or a heater coil high limit switch has blown. The high limit switch is a safety device that prevents the dryer from getting too hot and catching fire. I would check the belt and motor first bt removing the back and checking the belt and motor by hand turning the dryer drum and observing the belt and motor. If the motor is bad or going bad you should see signs of slight charring at the air vent holes onm the motor and you will for sure smell it. Good luck

GE DPXH46GA6CC gas dryer makes large humming noise in heat cycles and burning smell

Two things are likely going on here,1- something is dragging down your motor check for a twist in the belt, idler pulley bad, belt installed wrong or wrong belt. Also check your front drum felt and glides if the felt is bunched up that will drag down the motor. Now the smell you probably have some felt or lint in the burner clean it carefully you do not want to damage your igniter.

I have a frigidare dryer 5-6 years old. Recently, started smelling like something electrical is burning. If I hold down the start button the motor will turn the drum slowly and the burning smell returns....

Check for vent blockages! Overheating may be a serious issue and fire hazzard. A slow moving drum could mean a bad traction belt, jammed mechanical part or the motor is not spinning at a proper RPM which may indicate motor damage also. The electrical burning is a serious issue also and a fire hazzard. Dryers need periodical cleaning to remove excess lint, dust and debris. Lack of cleaning causes the dryer to work harder and run hotter. Excessive heat shortens the life of many parts such as belts, bearings, electronics, wiring, etc...

Drum does not turn.- hums, then electricity kicks off. - slight burning smell I have not had a problem with element

Sounds to me like your motor has shorted and is throwing the circuit breaker. I would first check the connections and then get down inside your dryer and remove the belt so the motor has a free ability to turn and try to spin the pulley by hand. If it has some hang ups then the motor is bad. A burnt smell coming from it would also indicate this. Make sure to unplug the dryer before doing any inspecting or replacing of parts.

Dryer trips circuit breaker smell almost like something burning coming from dryer

In order to trip a circuit breaker, there is almost for sure, a dead short to ground. Takes quite a bit to trip a breaker. The smell is most likely something electrical burning. Stop resetting the breaker and have it checked out. Continous resetting and tripping can cause more damage. The breaker is doing it's job.

Runs louder than normal then just stops.

most common causes of a noisy dryer are bad drum support rollers, a bad idler pulley or a bad blower wheel

Hoover HDC7FM condensor dryer starts then cuts out

Open the dryer door (right after the breaker trips) and check for a burned smell. If it smells in the dryer, you probably have a direct short in the dryer wiring. Check for a burn smell at the wall socket. There may be a short in the socket itself, but not likely unless a mouse is lying across the contacts in the wall.
If everything checks ok replace the circuit breaker if this is an older home. Circuit breakers weaken after years of use. A 30 amp circuit breaker will trip at a much lower amperage after a period of years especially if it has tripped often.

Dryer stoped running

Your drive belt may have broken if it smelled like rubber burning. If that is the case then your motor bearing are worn out or something has been lodged between your dryer drum and the dryer housing. If the smell was the odor of burning plastic, then your motor is probably burned up.
