Problem: ------------ The machine has a mechanical problem. -OR- A foreign objects such as a clip or ripped paper is in the machine.
Solution: ------------- Open the scanner cover and remove any foreign objects inside the machine. If the error message continues, do one of the following: ?? (MFC-440CN only) See Transferring your faxes or Fax Journal report on page 139 before disconnecting the machine so you will not lose any important messages. Then, disconnect the machine from the power for several minutes and then reconnect it. ??

More than likely you have a bad printhead, if its under warranty brother will pay to have it fixed, otherwise just play baseball with it and buy another one

I say you throw it in the trash

my brother mfc-440cn printer says, "unable to print 51" on the screeen after if off (which it woudn't let me do. I had to unplug it. It just won't work.

Confirm Success on a 440CN

1) Remove Plastic wire covers from inside printers, and release plastic stay on lower edge, tilt cover to 90 Degrees
2) make a note of where each connector goes
3) release the Ribbon and 3 Multicore cables, removing grounding screw, then remove scanner module by sliding it off the hinges at 90 degrees.
4) Remove Three Front Panel Screws, carefully leaver front panel upwards releasing front side clips.
5) Remove front panel by disconnecting ribbon and wireing on both sides.
6) Remove 6 Screws (2 on back, three at front and one middle right
7) Carefully remove speaker cable (Red Connector) and lift up plastic casing, leaving printer uncovered.
8) Re-Seat Encoder Strip into guide. (The Transparent strip)
9) Re-assemble in reverse and Hey Presto.

All Cured. Hopefully!

If the MFC has no faxes, disconnect the MFC from the power source for several minutes and then reconnect it. ?OR? If faxes are present, you can transfer them to another fax machine. Go to Step 3. ?OR? You can forward the faxes to your PC. Please see Transfer faxes to your PC. Transfer faxes to another fax machine If you have not set up your Station ID, you cannot enter fax transfer mode. 3. Enter the fax number to which faxes will be forwarded. 4. Press Black Start. 5. After the faxes are transferred, disconnect the MFC from the power source for several minutes and then reconnect it. You can transfer the Fax Journal report to another fax machine by pressing Menu/Set, 9, 0, 2 in Step 1 Transfer faxes to your PC You can move the faxes from your MFC?s memory to your PC. 1. Press Menu/Set, 2, 5, 1. 2. Using ▲ or ▼, select PC Fax Receive, and then press Menu/Set. The LCD will ask if you want to transfer a fax to your PC. 3. To transfer all faxes to your PC, press 1. ?OR? To keep all faxes in the MFC?s memory, press 2. 4. After the faxes are transferred, disconnect the MFC from the power source for several minutes and then reconnect it.
