Warming tray too hot

We inherited a Bunn VPR coffee maker. The machine makes good coffee, but the warming plate actually boils the coffee after it is brewed. We switched the upper and lower warming plates with the same results.

What can I do about this?

I fixed the problem. Bunn sent me a wire spacer shaped like the sigma symbol. Works great.

You can either replace the warming element with a new one, or some people put 3 or 4 pennies on the top of the warmer tray. Don't laugh- this really does work!

Bunn VPR Series warming too hot

You will need to check the heating element wiring to see that isn't a short on the neutral side. This could cause them to continue to heat even if the thermostat is working. If all wiring is ok check the function and resistance given by the thermostat.

I have a Bunn coffee maker with date code of 401406. It is almost 4 years old and still brews perfectly. The warming plate does not heat up any longer so the coffee will not stay warm after it is brewed....

The manual for this coffee maker can be found at this link:

While the manual does not contain repair instructions, it does have some troubleshooting tips to follow if your coffee is not staying hot.

I have a Bunn model VPR, I can fill it up with water, plug it in, no water. turn it on, no water. it gets hot. I opened it up, there is no restriction. What coulf cause this?

This is a pour over unit.

You fill the tank with water, it heats the water in the tank.
When the water in the tank is at brewing temp, the lite should go out.

To brew coffee with this system, you put a filter in the brew funnel, put coffee in the filter. Place the brew funnel in the slide tabs to hold in place. put an empty decanter on the warming plate under the brew funnel. Then take one decanter of fresh water and pour it in the top of the brewer where it says "WATER ONLY" the coffee will begin brewing immediatly.

Adjusting the temperature

Our Bunn VPR was delivering luke warm coffee. The problem was lime scale buildup on the heating element. I recommend using a cleaner such as Brew Rite or a vinegar solution. If it still does not heat properly, unplug and remove the heating element for cleaning. This corrected our problem.

Warming plate boils coffee.

Make sure you are using the type of commercial coffee pot like the one in the picture. They don't have to have to be plastic with the metal bottom, they can be all glass. The commercial pots are heavy duty and usually disperse the heat well.

If you are using commercial pots the only solution without replacing the warmers is to put three pennies on the warmer and to put the pot on top of them. The pennies will get hot so don't forget and grab them but the pennies help to move the pot just a little way away from the direct heat.

Bunn UPR warmer too hot

Try connecting two elements in series. See if this keeps it hot enough. (One switch controlling both burners.) See if another brand of burner will fit in the hole. Check to see if the wattage is lower.
