Thompson DVD DTH271E refuses to play HD DVDs but fine normal DVDS, cant seem to get any help via Thompson, & think may need "firmfare" update? New machine but in Spain & language...

Hello there.

Push "Play/Pause" and "DVD Rec" on the dvd recorder a few seconds to see the service menu. There you can find your firmware version.

Post back the version for us.

The Emerson LD195EM8 7 does not have a QAM tuner. It just has the ATSC (digital OTA) and NTSC (analog OTA and cable) tuners. Emerson TVs are manufactured by Funai. You can find most of their manuals here: http://www.emersonaudiovideo.com/support/download.php . Enter your model number without the 7 to find the download link; the direct link is hidden in the Java script. Sears Parts Direct also has the manual. The direct link to the LD195EM8 manual is http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/pd_download/lis_pdf/OWNM/L0810491.pdf .

Sounds like a bad connection to whatever you have it connected to (cable box, dvd player, etc). Check the connection and then replace cables.

Check and replace its laser pickup unit. Contact any service technician. The has to be opened to get the DVD mechanism out from the TV to get this part replaced. We have a wharfedale dvdr24hdmi player recorder but the hddvd we have purchased will not play.A note inside the dvd disc suggests we consult yourselves for a firmware or software update.

The wharfedale dvdr24 is an upscaling dvd player and not a hd dvd player which is why it wont recognise the disc you are trying to play.

HDMI just means that it connects to your tv via an hdmi cable, so unfortunatley you'll need to buy a hd dvd player to play your disc.

Sorry to say, but a firmware update will not reformat your DVD player into BluRay or HDDVD capabilities.
There is only one way to get your TV to display BluRay DVDs, that is to purchase a BluRay player and connect it to your TV with a HDMI cable, now this will also require your TV to have a HDMI port to connect to, and your TV must be able to display full
1080p resolution,with that said I don't know of a 19" TV that is full 1080p capable,especially not a combo unit.
