By mistkae I bought 3E MYC installed and have been using them for about a month with no problems. Today the "WRONG CARTRIDGE" message started to flash and sheets feed through but nothing prints. I replaced the 3E MYC with 6MYC (all are OEMs), but it still says "WRONG CARTRIDGE" and does not show full tanks on the display. I have tried all the maintenance options...no luck. Is this a print head thing too?
PIXMA MP780 "WRONG CARTRIDGE" MESSAGE?
Here is what I did and it now works just fine.I turned off the printer and unplugged the power cord, and unplugged it from my computer. I then removed all the ink cartriges and removed the print Head I got some rubbing alcohol put it on some toilet paper and wiped down the back and bottom of the print head.Plugged everything back in and It now works better then ever.
THIS WORKS! i have a pixma mp780 and the solution provided by pdt4161 is the only one that worked for me. but i had to use paper towels (stronger) and of course rubbing alcohol; and cleaned bottom of printer head thoroughly about 4 different times before printer actually worked sans errors.
so how do you remove the printhead when the unit won't power up? The printhead is parked at the end of the carriage. Thanks

I can tell you that the MP780 does not know the difference between a BCI3 and a BCI6 cartridge so there is definitely another issue.
Gave the print head a good washin' with water and even after using head cleaner and alcohol (I was doin' the drinkin' tryin' to fix this thing) it came back to life.
Thanks for the info

the mp780 would only read mp 750 when i installed the printhead
so i took it to a place where cannon recommended and they said it is the board which is over 300 dollars to fix because cannon is trying to phase out the mp 780 printer
the printer is working fine only cannot do printing of the cd's dvd's
the mechanic said it worked perfectly till he turned it off and when he turned it on again it reset at mp750 so it is telling him it is the main board/logic..
so thank you all for your assistance:):)
OK, did anyone ever really get an answer for this problem? I have the same problem, I've tried all the solutions. Some of them worked for a few minutes or hours, I could print one sheet, then go right back to 'wrong cartridge'. I paid for an answer here, and got nothing. Is my Canon garbage? And all the new Canon ink I've just purchased? Since I can make a copy sometimes, I'm sure my ink or printhead is not the problem. Come on Canon, obviously a liot of owners share this problem. Don't you think you owe us a real solution? If you think I'd buy another Canon when you won't even try to help with this, you're very mistaken!

Usually answered in minutes!
Today I got the message "wrong cartridge" but all of my cartridges are
the correct ones. I have been refilling them and have never had a
problem. I took them out and made sure they were snapped in
correctly.
Would like to know if there is a solution.
yes we have been using "ink power substitute cartridges" with no problem and this perceived lite period it has taken to saying "wrong cartridge" also red light "alarm" flashing ...by the way these substitutes are $20 for 6 also they have changed the label on the
"ink power"
which used to read RC-6C
now reads
RC - 3/3e/5/6C
now went to the store and purchased the $75 dollar canon inks
still showing red light flashing "alarm" also "wrong cartridge"
also
the ink levels did not change to full after entering the canon inks $75 dollar batch. please can you advise!
thank you email [email protected]
i also have problem with wrong cartridge on my printer, how can we fix
Received the Wrong Cartridges flashing message, after changing a cartridge. All cartridges removed and check all cartridges fitted are OEM and are the correct type and in the correct order. The flashing light also still show that the cartridges is empty. With all cartridges removed flashing light still indicating that the wrong cartridge is fitted. Have tried switching off and resarting with no improvment. Does any know if there is solution to this problem
I too have the same problem of flshing red ALARM light and error message of "WRONG CARTRIDGE". I took all the canon recommended steps and now i am to take it to service shop to get printer head replaced. Not sure if that would really resolve the problem. Beginning to wonder if if this is a software issue rather that printer issue. Any suggestions/comments on what to do?
OK - same here! I assumed it might be a problem with the Hobbicolors kit I have been using but they have worked fine up until now and as there is no chip in the cartridges and the physical appearance is the same - the printer should not know the difference. I tried reinstalling the driver and taking out the tanks and later the printhead. I don't know what worked but it did for a short while, then recurrence of the problem.
I have just reinstalled the driver and on advice from Canon disconnected the printer totally from the mains supply for 30 mins (it is normally connected all the time just off at the button) - so far it works. Wondering if the head is going faulty? £60 for a new one if so and its only 2 yrs old! hope the power off fix is permanent!
OK my 'fix' didn't last long - something is not right. I wondered if any one who posted here found the solution? I hate to think how much it will cost to repair but I want to keep this printer as its multi function and easy to refill.
Is it the printhead? A new one is £60 so not something to 'try and see'!
maybe the firmware? Can this be reinstalled/ HELP!
UPDATE - Just replaced the printhead. Found a cheap source at £33. Thus far its working fine (thank goodness!) as when I switched it on to replace the head it came up with the error message straight away. After the new head went through the alignment process. printed documents. Been switched off and on and still OK.
Fingers crossed watch this space!
Pity I could not find a way to override the original error as the printer when working (for short periods after fiddling around) did work fine. I have cleaned up the old head and will store - one day might try it again to see if it works. meanwhile leaving well alone!
Finally I must have saved the price of the printer over 2 years by using Hobbicolors in refills. I import the kits from America to UK as they seem so good. Not the cheapest but have had problems with bargain basement inks before!
