MSI K8T Neo 2 not recognize Hitach 1 TB Sata

MSI K8T Neo 2 (MS-6702e Ver:1) will not recognize a 1 TB Hitachi SATA drive except when connected by by a usb adapter. It already uses a Maxtor 1 TB drive.

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2010

    After a second call to Hitachi, I found that I could run their Disk Feature program on floppy or CD on any computer that would recognize the drive at SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) then use the Disk Feature program to lower the SATA data rate to 1.5 Gb/s. After changing the drive to 1.5 Gb/a, my system recognized the drive with no problem.
    Thanks for your help.

This is a quote from VIA:

"CHIP FIRM VIA issued a note to its customers telling them of problems with chipset support for hard drives using the Serial ATA II standard.
It said that VT8237 and VT8237R chipsets don't provide forward compatibility for S-ATA II, which is important as hard drive makers are beginning to manufacture this type of drive.

But Via is readying the release of VT8237R Plus, which will solve the problem. This means that motherboard makers that use the former chipset should clear their inventory before September.

Hard drive manufacturers position with S-ATA II is as follows, said Via in its note. Western Digital and Samsung are already shipping these devices, while Seagate and Maxtor will start shipping them during this quarter.

If you connect S-ATA II drives to an old Via chipset which includes the VT8237, VT8237R, VT6420 and VT6421L, the devices won't be detected.

Some mobo makers, such as Epox, have already responded to the problem and have warned their customers to seek the support of hard drive vendors. In a letter to its customers, it said that they should also check the specs of other manufacturers' Via based motherboards."

Testimonial: "Thanks for quick explanation! Now I can return the drive."

How would you know what type K8T Neo of motherboard you have mine just says K8T Neo

The manual is mostly the same.
MSI K8T Neo is also, MS-6702 (v1.X) ATX Main board. You'll find K8T Neo printed just in-between the first and second PCI slot.
In-between the second and third PCI slots you should see, MS-6702 ver 1.0 (Printed in white). All 5 models use the same chipsets. VIA K8T800 PRO Northbridge and VT8237R/Plus Southbridge. K8T Neo-FSR/ FIS2R Socket 939 use the same manual.
K8T Neo-V V2.0 uses a socket 754 CPU.
K8T Neo2-F V2.0 Also uses socket 754 CPU.
K8T Neo2-F-FIR Uses a socket 939 CPU
So open the link provided for drivers, bios ECT;
http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=searchresult&keywords=K8T+Neo&table=download
The most noticeable item is the SATA ports. From 2 ports and up to 4 ports. In different locations on the MB.

Board is not recognizing my 80G Maxtor drive. I

with AmiBios you may be able to get it to rediscover your drive... If that doesn't work, open the case and check your IDE and SATA connections. Sounds like you have a RAID configuration with your Promise board.

Not sure I've helped, but you have some clues to check on. Probably visiting Promise's website and looking for troubleshooting may help.

If your Maxtor drive is a SMART drive, you might be able to check to see if it indeed has failed.

Its the model numbers that vary the most when looking for the manual. Click on the link below to open MSI download site;

While on MSI's site I searched for MS-6702 and left out the term, "K8T NEO". MSI provided the another link; http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=searchresult&keywords=MS-6702&table=download
The model numbers K8T Neo-FSR and FIS2R, use the same manual.
See link; http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=manual&maincat_no=1&prod_no=565
K8T Neo2-F and FIR use the same manual.
From the pic included, Connect everything to JFP1. Connect the speaker to JFP2.
b972b2a.jpg Wire colors do vary from case to case. Normally solid colors like red, green, blue and dark blue are used as positive. White and black are negative. Each jumper pair will share a common color. That common color is negative except when hooking up the speaker wire. Black is used for negative.

Cheers!
