Canon 160 printer

You may need to download canon's navigator program to retrieve the scan. The printer driver will not do that. Just google "canon navigator (plus your printer model) and the program should come up.

• Install the software that came with the printer.The MP navigator EX program.
• Open this program[navigator EX program].
• Turn on the printer.
• Insert the documents you want to scan into the document feeder.
• Press scan on the printer.
• The documents will scan into the navigator program.

Make sure the scanner is connected to your laptop/PC before you press 'scan' and is turned on.
Pressing the scan option will start Canan's software MP Navigator for scanning. You can also start MP Navigator on your PC and then start scanning directly from your program or from the printer button.

open the front cover on the printer ,
u should see a glass ,
place the document/picture , that u r lookin to scan face down ,
then , make sure the little display on the printer says : scan mode 
or should have scan button . 

hit the start or the scan button to start the process ., (ensure u hav the correct printer drivers installed on ur computer ..

I'm using an MG5220 and got this same message. Here's how I fixed it.

On the printer control panel press the soft key to select the scan function. Then hit the soft key to select Save/Forward. Then select Foward scanned data to a PC. On the next screen make sure to select the appropriate PC. In my case I'm connected wireless but the selection was set to USB connection and that's why I was getting the error noted above. When I picked the PC that is connected wirelessly everything worked fine again.

I had the same problem, and this is the fix.

1. Go to Canon's website and find the "Drivers and Downloads" section. From there, you will need to specify the subcategories of your hardware, and then your specific model (for example: Hybrid (i.e.-Printer & Scanner), Inkjet, MP470 Series)

2. When you find the proper page for your model printer, select your operating system from the drop down list.

3. Scroll down the page. You will see all versions of the drivers and programs to download. Download the latest version of the driver. You should also download the "My Printer" program. This is useful for troubleshooting and maintenance.

4. Keep scrolling until you find the "MP Navigator" program. This is a very important program, and is necessary for the scanner to operate properly. Download this program.

5. One MP Navigator is downloaded, verify that the scanner will use this program when it operates. To do this, go to the Start menu, click on Control Panel, click on Scanners and Cameras, click the printer that you will be using, then click properties. Click the tab at the top that says "Events." You will then see a drop down menu with the options Save to PC, Save as PDF, etc. Verify for each option that your computer is either opening the MP Navigator program, or that the computer will prompt you on which program to open.

This should get your scanner working. Hope this helps!

When you first setup your Canon printer with the CD to work with your computer, it will install a program called "MP Navigator". This program works in conjunction with the printer to scan and save your documents. If you haven't already setup your Canon printer to use this program, try downloading it through the Canon USA website. Good luck.

Try using your scanner from your computer, I'm using windows XP and when i go to My Computer and the printer is connected i see a section that says Scanner and Cameras, your printer should be there, click on it and follow the easy step to scan a document.
