Color chart in Word 2007 prints as a black box

I edited a chart in a 2003 document using our new Word 2007, but saving it as a 97-2003 document. When I printed it, it just printed black box instead of the chart.

Just wanted to add, even if you save the Word and Excel 2003 files as 2007 files, a black box still prints. Most times relinking or reimporting the files after saving them as 2007, it resolves this problem, but... not always. I say this one should be pushed back to Microsoft to get it right, for we should have to recreate or redo the files, its just not efficient! Wouldn't you agree?

Have you tried saving the document as a 2007-document, and printing it out after that?

One of our staff members had a chart that they have embedded in a Word 03 document. The text on the Y axis is in reverse order, but when the chart is double-clicked, the text it is correct. When printed to Acrobat, the chart is black.

I saved as Office 2007, with no better success, but the text (compatibility mode) did not disappear from the heading of the document even though I saved as a docx.

I saved once more, this time making sure the Maintain Compatibility checkbox under the file type was not checked. The chart corrected itself on-screen and it printed correctly.

How to know if a document is in word 97 format? I have microsoft word 2002 in my pc. is it in word 97 format too?

MS Word files have .doc extension (Word 97-2003 Format). With Word 2002, you can open and edit Word 97 files as well. Since launch of MS Office 2007, the files have the extension .docx. These files can be opened with earlier versions of MS Word (97, 2002, 2003 etc) by installing the compatibility pack, which is available at Microsoft Official Site.

Hope this answers your question. Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

Good Luck!
Appreciate generously, if the solution could have been of any help!

In which we can open .docx files

You can open docx extension files only with MS Office 2007. If you wish to open it in earlier versions you have to save it again in compatible mode. Click on File (top left most corner with the logo), Save As, Word 97-2003 Document. Just using Save option will save your document as "docx" and not "doc" document.

Not sure if you help with software problems but its worth a try. I recently updated from office 1997 to office 2003 student/teacher edition. I need to do extensive edit to many old Word documents by...

If you are a Word 2003 user, but some of your colleagues are still using Word 2002 or even Word 97, you can share your documents with them as long as you save them in the standard Word document format. By having Word 2003 save your documents in this format, you can disable features not supported by the earlier versions and allow users to open your documents on their PCs.
If you don't want to do this every time you save a document, you can have Word automatically save your new documents in the correct format. Follow these steps:
  1. Go to Tools | Options.
  2. Click the Save tab.
  3. Under Default Format, click the drop-down arrow in the Save Word Files As box and select Word 97-2003 Document(*.doc).
  4. Click OK.
When you save your Word 2003 document, you will get a dialog box warning that some of the features that you used may not be available in the earlier versions. Click Yes to save it in the standard format that you'll share with the other users.
