How can I keep my 2 stage snowblower in high?

I have an MTD 2 stage 179cc snowblower. In the lower stage the snow just barely throws 1-2 ft but in the higher stage it is great. How can I keep my 2 stage snowblower in high?

I will assume you are referring to the 2 stages in the front of the machine. The spiral auger rakes are the first stage, they are designed to collect the snow and feed it to the impeller. The impeller is the 2nd stage and is to throw the snow up the chute. The lower rakes in the front do nopt throw snow only collect it.

Does 4-stroke and 4-cycle mean the same thing?

yes ... intake, compression, power, exhaust .... vs 2 cycle which mixes them down to two.

My thrower stopped throwing (and going). The manual said to adjust or replace the belts. I did. Now it throws but no drive wheel action. The manual is just about useless. Talking to Sears is like talking...

Actully yes although you seam to have a fairly good understaning of what is going on
There is a clutch when you push that drive lever down it tightens the belt.
It could be the trans but I would look at the level down the cable to the pulley that it is moveing before I pushed off the nearest cliff

Craftsman 179cc ohv 2 stage snowblower loses power in second stage throwing heavy snow

You should check for belt condition and adjustment. Under more load the auger/impeller belt might start to slip and would result in poor performance. For improved performance in wet slush there is an "impeller modification" that can be found with a web search. It's adding rubber wipers to the impeller blades and it does a great job of tossing that stuff out the chute instead of clogging it.
