Picture is suddenly "bowed" and the convergence is askewed at everypoint but center.

My Akai PT5598HDIX rear projection TV has been working fine for the past 3+ years. I had it on this morning (it was fine), then turned it on again a few hours later, and the screen is now "bowed" (like a bow tie) and the convergence is off at everypoint but center. You can see the three images (Red, Blue and Green) of the same picture simultaneously offset and overlapping one another on all sides. [Icalled] The Customer Care Center suggests that I call the local TV Repair shop to have someone look at it, but I think there should be a way to fix it myself (remotely). I have retreived and recorded (on paper) all of the menu settings (using Mute, 1, 8, 2, power) and then tried the "reset" function with no success. Any ideas?

same problem after 3 years of use. HELP!!!

  • g6chamelion Mar 02, 2008

I had a tech (very difficult to find...35+ miles away) come out to the house to diagnose. He removed and repaired the convergence box. This process took about 5 days to find a tech, 5 days for the appointment to be scheduled, and 5 days for the fix...There were multiple fried circuits in the box. Although this corrected the "bow," the picture was not anywhere near normal. The picture was shrunk and slightly twisted, but more legible! This better, but not right correction cost was $220!...Nice guy...he cut me a break from the original quote of $395 since the fix wasn't right. He suspects another board may need to be removed and sent out (2 weeks or so at a cost of about $400-500 additional) to diagnose and hopefully make everything right.

I sat down and played with the adjustments (which would not work before the Convergence box was fixed) for about 2 hours and fudged the picture on the screen so that you cannot tell that anything was wrong...it looks new again...for now.

Thank you again for the help.

Same problem as above, picture bowed top and bottom, convergence

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can more info and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Sudden discoloration, ghosting, bowed horizontal lines in top and bottom of picture

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

Hitachi projection tv model 3 51gwx208

Do you mean that at the top of the picture, the red color has shifted downward, bowed towards the center? If that is what you see, one color suddenly bows toward the center on any side of the picture, then it means that one of your convergence IC's has burned out and needs to be replaced. It is a good idea to go ahead and replace both STK392-110 IC's with the newer improved STK392-150's. If you have never replaced convergence IC's and realigned the convergence circuits in a projection TV then allow a qualified tech to handle it for you.
