Hi there

wifi usb adapters used for desktops are ok but what you really need for that are pci slot wifi. but its your preference thought.

as youve mentioned, you want to increase your signal strength but you are hesitant to buy another device for that.

what you can do if you dont want to buy anything is use foil.

dont fret thought, foil is proven to work specially in increasing/boosting signal. what you want to do is make use of a parabolic or circular shape bowl or sattelite dish-like plate and cover that with foil. be sure that the usb adapter is in the middle of your sattelite though.

once youve already made this, you can try and use it and connect to the access point. b sure also to position it towards it ok.

hope this helps.

thats great to hear. hope this will work for you.

nitrotrike got some great ideas too. maybe someday you wana try that too. :)

  • Anonymous Feb 07, 2008

    got a follow up!

if you use pci slot wireless...use pringles technology.

if you use usb adapter wireless...use parabolic type.

    :)

Unfortunately, those USB adapters don't use any type of external antenna that you can modify.

My best suggestion is to get a used internal pci wireless card (they can be found for about $20), and use a high gain antenna that you can put out the window, etc.

If you want to REALLY pull in weak signals, get the internal card, and build yourself a "cantenna" for under $10 using a coffee can and a few parts from radio shack. They work EXTREMELY well.

It's a high-gain directional antenna you build out of a coffee can and a few connectors / wires. You can google "cantenna" for building / assembly instructions.

Heres another idea, and will require some ingenuity on your part.

Grab yourself a coffee can, and make an opening in the CENTER of the bottom of the can just large enough for the chrome part of the USB adapters end to fit through. If the hole is too large, thats ok too. Just don't make it so large that the whole adapter fits through it.

Place the USB adapter so that it is standing up in the center of the inside of the can. Plug it in to the extension cord, and use duct tape, etc on the outside of the can (where the extension cord is going in) to hold it in place. Make sure it is still standing up straight.

This can design is meant to capture / condense the incoming signal.

Knowing the direction / origin of the signal will be a great help in this case.

Just slowly rotate the can (open side away from you of course). If someone sees you doing this, they will most likely think you have lost your mind.

If it does increase the signal strength, secure it in that location.

If you need any further details / explanations, let me know.

Connecting a tp link wireless usb adapter to xbox 360

It is not possible to use generic usb wireless adapters with the Xbox or Xbox 360 game console. By 8246b47.jpgJohn Anderson Jun 20, 2012
The post John Anderson is correct that this would not work with a XBOX device. These are intended for and installed on computers (laptop or desktop) with which you would need to install drivers for it on. There is supported drivers that will allow the installation of this device into either a XBOX or PlayStation gaming console.

I can not get signal wi-fi when i try TP-LINK TL-WN722N connected to PC...but when i try in notebook there is no problem. My notebook and PC have same OS,thanks

Usually ordinary desktops doesn't have the capability to connect to a WLAN Network because there won't be any WiFi antenna embedded on the motherboard. But in the case of laptops for the ease of use of network services wherever you go they come fitted with WiFi antenna and hence can connect to a wireless LAN network by the flip of a switch.Connecting to a Wireless LAN network has nothing to do with OS because it is a Hardware feature. Please don't forget to rate me if satisfied with my solution. Thanks for choosing Fixya.

I want to buy a wireless network adapter USB. I do not have internet home, but there is a public connection that is a couple hundred feet away from my house that is public because it is a cafe. Can anyone...

A couple of hundred feet away may be too far for a good signal receiption.
You can increase your signal with an aerial.
You may need to go into the cafe or park yourself nexr door to the cafe.
Use Google to see what is available on the Internet.
Here are a few WEB sites for you to look at.
