Vertical lines in my laptop screen

Hello! I've been using my Compaq Presario (M2223AP) Laptop for 2 years now, then all of a sudden I saw 2 vertical lines on the screen. 1 line is a clear red line (but not so thick & dark) located about 1/3 from the left of the screen while the other is a very faint (thin, almost transparent) line located about 1/5 from the right of the screen. I think it might be a monitor problem. I'm not very good in fixing computers so I have not done anything about it yet. I'd appreciate your help very much. Thanks! I have a Toshiba Satellite and the whole right side of my screen is all vertical, colorful lines. Can this be fixed? Thanks.

Thanks, it's on warranty but Best Buy says it'll be 3 weeks to fix it. Whatever!

SOURCE: Vertical lines in my laptop screen

I know not everyone has this ability, but if you can, go to a friend's house and hook up an external monitor to your laptop. You may need to use the function keys to switch from LCD to external, but if the lines go away on the external, you have a bad LCD. If the line shows up still on the external, then your problem is either:

a) video driver (free, easy fix)
b) bad inverter (video 'outputter') ...approximately $10-50/varies + labor costs to replace
c) bad video card/motherboard ...usually between $200-$400 + labor to replace

Hope this helps - please be sure to rate my answer :)

Sorry, but I find these sites difficult to figure out - I'm not a chat room person. I just wanted to thank dg9dotorg for the comments and whenever I finally find out the cause and get it repaired next year, I will advise what caused it. edierosa

There could be three different possibilities why you would get a line on your lcd display.

First, it could be a missing signal from the controller IC to LCD driver IC

Second it could be a defective LCD driver IC itself

Third it could be a dry contact in the tape carrier package ( TCP).

Attach an external monitor to your laptop and make it your primary display unit to see if you are still getting the lines if not its you TCP if you still get lines it will need to have either the LCD IC or the controller IC checked and possibly replaced.

That a great answer I'm just trying to figure out how to fix it. I have the same problem I hooked a external monitor on it works great. How do you fix tape carrier package ( TCP)?

Have you tried hooking it up to an external monitor?
This would ensure that it's the screen and not the video card..
If you do that and you receive a good picture then it could be something as simple as a loose video cable. Or it could also mean something like a bad video card or the expensive one, a bad screen.

if this line is there during boot up then it is a monitor problem usually. but if it is not then it is a problem with your windows files. you could try reinstalling your windows from the disks you were given with it? otherwise i will look into it. email me if you need more help. [email protected]

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

My understanding is that you have 2 laptops with the same problem, if that is the case, you need to replace the lcd. When you have lines on lcd's, that is a sign of a bad lcd.

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

There can be 3 possible reasons for this
1)Screen connector cable is loose. You can try to re-seat it and see if works.
2)display card problem. Connect your laptop to an external monitor and see if the problem persists. If it does not then
3)You will need to get a replacement LCD screen.
Hope this helps!

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

Hi,
what i recommend you to test is to press behind your monitor and see that the line goes off or not.If it does..that mean you have a loose connection,it can be fix.Incase no then you have problem with your LCD.Normally if its LCD problem then you fix this problem, all you have to do is change the LCD.
goodluck,takecare.
