My GE Instajack is showing green lights on the base and extension units, but I get no dial tone at the extension unit. I have a phone plugged into the base unit and am receiving a dial tone there.
One of the documents I saw online mentioned when the phone on the extension unit is off the hook the light on the extension unit will blink green. Mine remains solid when the phone is off the hook and I receive no dial tone.

The feature you are looking for is called "prime line" or "Line preference" but not "ringing line preference". It is not usually on by default on a multi-line business phone system. Your system can do this but I suspect it's a system programming feature and not something you can set yourself. You would have to have the phone system administrator make the change. Or you may pay an installation company to make programming changes?

I have found this free link on BT site for you

If the second handset works ok on the base and the first handset doesn't, then you are right...the fault lies with the first handset. There are batteries ( special type ) in the handset, it sound as if either the batteries are dead, or not charged ( try charging them for 12 hours on the good base station ) or the connection is bad.

Your handset has somehow lost its ability to see your base. Try re-registering it to your base. To do so, at the handset push MENU 001 . Then at the base, push and hold down the INTERCOM/LOCATOR button down until the IN USE light begins flashing. Then at the handset push OK, and within a few seconds it should beep and be registered. If first not successful try again. If it still does not work, try de-registering the handset, then repeat the registration procedures I described above. Here is a link to the manual that describes these procedures, look on page 39. http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Operating-Instructions/details-KX-TG6051M
