Had the same thing happen to my year and a half old iMac. Tried to turn it on one night and the only thing that worked were the fans. My daughter had given it to me as a gift and we didn't think about getting the extended warranty on it. Big mistake. Took it to Best Buy Geek Squad but they didn't have a clue. Paid for the analysis and to send it to Apple for repair. Also bought a 250 Gig Passport for the Geeks to retrieve documents and photos before sending it off. Cost around $200 for everything. About a week later Apple called to give me an estimate for repair. The mother board was fried and to install a new one would be $1800+! Needless to say, I could buy another iMac for about that amount! They thought possibly lightning had gone through one or more of the power sources. Either the cable wiring or the electrical (AC) wiring. I bought a new one WITH the longest warranty I could get. I love Macs but they are certainly not long lasting considering the price. P.S. The iMac I had before my daughter bought me one, got about 50+ vertical lines running all the way across the 17" monitor. The one I had before that was a little, fat iMac that was a monitor with the computer guts enclosed with see-through back. The monitor slowly went black on that one.

Go to the apple web site there are many write ups for screen and motherboard resets of the PMU. If not you mave have to send it in for service or find a local apple store to see if they can help.

Imac is not detecting my LaCie External Hard Drive

Do you have a CD disc software installer of your external hard drive (F.A. Porshe 160GB).? If you got it, you must reinstall it, so that your Imac can detect it. Otherwise, find it at the internet and download it.
The power failure could have damage some stored data about your External Hard Drive in your Imac. That's why, you have to reinstall it. Send us your e-mail comments for us.

IMac G3 Not Starting

Hey, RexKing:

Your problem is hard to diagnose with your current description without knowing where the clicking sound is coming from or exactly what it sounds like, but most likely the problem resides either with the power supply or its connection to the circuit boards. If you have access to any scrapped G3 iMacs to cannibalize for parts at an E-recycling depot, you can probably find just about anything you need, as long as you get the right model, as they changed key components a few times, but, like cars, a lot of parts cross over. The exact model description is on the bottom in really fine print.

In any case, you will have to take it apart to check out the power supply and/or other components, which is a bit tricky without a guide. You can find a really comprehensive Apple iMac G3 service document, for many of the later models, posted at this URL as an 11 Mb PDF file:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/103447/iMac-G3-Disassembly-Guide?autodown=pdf

Only catch is that to download it you need to sign up for a free SCRIBD account. (It's a document sharing co-op site.) Hopefully this won't result in years of spam. Good luck, and if you figure out the cause, please let me know. (I have about a dozen iMac G3s that I am gradually refurbishing.)

Imac g5 is so noisy

Fan sometimes get stuck on, I won't bore you with the technical details as to why or the terminal command to fix. Just do this...
Shut down. Unplug the power cord from the back of the tower. Wait 15 minutes and plug it back in. Power up, it should have reset it.
The fans are "smart", some of them are designed to run only as needed, sometimes they get a little tangled up in their own underwear.
