First and foremost, you will be instructed to check whether your optical drive can read DVD disc. Technically, optical drives retrieve and/or store data on optical discs like CDs, DVDs, and BDs (Blu-ray discs). A CD drive can only read CD discs, a DVD drive can only read DVD and CD discs, and a Blu-ray drive can read CD, DVD, and Blu-ray discs. Therefore, check your optical drive and make sure that it can read DVD disc before proceeding to the next step.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

"The commercial DVD player specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place not play discs encoded for a different region".

If you don't live in Region 1 and you know most DVD's ARE Region 1, it would make sense that some care should be taken to buy DVD's compatible with YOUR region.

The DVD you're using is probably from elsewhere than the region you live in. It is almost certainly possible to temporarily change the region by using a trick which will not damage your machine in any way. Google "Philips DVP642 region hack" and there will be an answer.

DVDs are encoded with a "Region Code" to allow studios to control release dates around the world. Hong Kong Region Code is 3, UK is 2. Your player will not play back Region 2 DVDs that you are purchasing or renting in UK. It will work fine with Region Code 3 DVDs I would bet.

Sorry to deliver the bad news.

I have the same problem, though I don't recall which exact movies. They were all from Blockbuster. Sometimes they start to play and then halt at the end of track 1 and sometimes don't even make it tot he menu. The same movie will play on our portable dvd player. A Philips rep told me about 6 weeks ago it was a problem with a new security feature on some movies and to watch the website for a possible firmware upgrade to fix it. Now you can't even talk to someone at Philips so I don't know what to think. The "live chat" folks just want to tell you to take it to a repair shop - not much help there.

I have a Philips DVP642 DVD player. It has worked

First try a soft reset... unplug for 20 minutes.
Otherwise - the laser is dirty or misaligned.
A Repair shop can clean and align for about $50.
It takes specialized equipment and templates to align the laser - not something you can do on your own.

Lens cleaner discs don't work.
