my ds wont charge it comes on and the lite is red and shuts down

  • BaldBarber Feb 19, 2008

Same her. When I insert plug to charge the DS - Lite, the red light lights up for 1-2 sec's. And then nothing. DS Lite wont turn on at all!

  • Anonymous Feb 20, 2008

same problem, not the cord, battery or outlet.I think the defect is in the black piece with copper wire inside the charging port. What can I do.My DSlite is 2 months out of warrenty! The red light flashes when connecting the charger-when the charger is only abour 1/3 inserted for a split second then goes out.Unable to make it stay on by partially plugging it in I goes out regardless. Battery slowly ran down since it was not charging... now it won't turn on at all. I s there any help. This seems to be a flaw with this system that many are experiencing!! Have had gameboy(for like 20 yrs) and game boy advanced( for like 8yrs?) never a problem! even now

    Thanks ,

    CJ Pipoly

My daughter is having the same problem. Her bottom screen won't even go on. The top screen flashes about 3 times and then nothing. The power is not staying on. I have tried calling the Nintendo Customer Service number on the back of the DS Lite but I keep getting cut off.

  • vectra02 Mar 04, 2008

ninetendo ds lite will not charge, soon as you input the charger the light comes on a split second then goes off again.

  • bluepeanut Mar 05, 2008

I have the exact same power problem and also 2 months out of warrenty. I replaced the battery but does the same thing. Green light stays lit for a few seconds and bottom screen flashes ... and everything just goes off. No help on Nintendo's web site - just says $75 - $85 to have fixed for power problems. Any suggestions?

  • scumfrog Mar 09, 2008

Same problem here. It appears to be charged up but won't go on. Defect alert?

  • Anonymous Apr 19, 2008

This must be something very specific.  I have precisely the same problem.  The little orange light flashes when the charge wire is inserted about 1/3 of the way, but that's it.  After the flash, I can't turn it on, no screens, no lights, nothing.

One strange thing though.  After leaving it plugged in this condition for a month or so, the DS miraculously worked for a couple hours.  Then it died and I'm back to square one...

Anyway, just wanted to share.  Sound like this is a rather specific defect.

  • juliex7 Jun 27, 2008

why is it my ds will not turn on but the red light comes on when charger is plugged in but it will not charge

  • blueCturtle Jun 29, 2008

My nintendo won't charge, and the battery has run down so it will only come on for a few seconds with the red light then shut off again. I tried switching the chargers, but that didn't work. I took out the battery but it looks fine. I'm in Iraq right now, and I was using my nintendo ds as an alarm clock. I didn't realize it wasn't charging until it shut off one morning before waking me up. Luckily, I got up early to check the time and realized it was broken. Seems like a common problem, looking at all the posts, but not a common solution. Any ideas?

  • cmm996 Jul 14, 2008

same thing with me,my ds charges for like 1 second then the charge light goes off,i know my charger is fine because i tried the charger on my brother's ds lite and it works fine,i know my battery's fine, because i tried it on my brothers ds and it works fine,i've read the nintendo manual and saw some of the things i've done to my ds that it says not to do.but the charger and battery are fine, but i HAVE noticed this,
if you push the power button during that 1 second the charge light is on,and you pay close attention, you will see the power light turn on for a 1/4 second, then it will turn off again.
i'm 11 and my 6 year old brother wont let me borrow his ds again.
    please help me,i've tried everything

The same exact thing is happening to me. I'll attempt to charge the Nintedo Ds Lite and the light goes out after about 3 seconds. It doesn't charge. I bought this about 11 months ago. I've charged it about 3 times total since then. I even bought a new charger and the same thing happens. It doesn't charge.

Hey everyone, not sure if this will work for everyone, but its worth a shot.  my problem was identical to all the others here, a flash of orange and then nothing.
i thought perhaps those little metal contacts on the battery and the ds had build up a little corrosion, interrupting the charge.  so, i took some rubbing alcohol and q-tips and gently scrubbed them clean, both on the battery AND the ds side.
After this, my ds has worked flawlessly.  Hope it's the same for you!

Problem solved (for me at least)! I was having the exact same problem - orange light would flash for a second when I first plugged in the A/C adapter, then nothing - left it plugged in for hours, still nothing. Not sure why I thought of doing this, but I noticed that the orange light came on before it was even plugged in tight; i.e. as soon as I inserted the tip of the adapter into the DS. This is where it starts sounding dirty - I kept VERY quickly putting the tip in and out fast enough that the light didn't have a chance to turn off - after doing that for maybe 30 seconds or so I plugged it fully back in and the orange light stayed on! The DS itself wasn't able to turn on at first, but I left it plugged in and checked again a half-hour later and it did. So far it's still working although I haven't given the battery lifespan a good test run, but I'd say it's worth a try - I guess sometimes it just needs a jumpstart! Let me know if it works for you!

I had just boughten a new ds lite. When I first plugged in the charger to charge it for the very first time it did the single orange flash to nothing. I had thought it must be a fuse or something but checked the forums and called nintendo to see if I had to take it back or if it was something simple. Basically nothing worked till I read this post and it totally got the orange light to stay on. I suggest at least giving this a try before sending or returning your ds. Gonna give it some time and see if it turns on now... Thanks Solott55, :)

  • Shammi Mohamed
    Shammi Mohamed Aug 01, 2016

OMG!! I can't believe this was the issue.

After reading about fuses and all, I even opened up my DS to test the fuses and they were not the issue. I was almost about to buy a replacement battery, when I came across this and I'm really glad I did.

DS Lite has steady orange light and seems to be charging.

  • solott55 Aug 02, 2016

...So it's 2018 and I just tried this with my DS Lite that has been shut off for YEARS and was having this issue....I haven't switched it on, yet, but omg! The charging light is now staying on! It really is such a weird little fix, haha. Thanks so much for sharing!

  • solott55 Jun 28, 2018

  • Sven Stenberg
    Sven Stenberg Feb 12, 2019

YES! I was prepared to just send it to the recyclers as I didn't feel like spending the time or money to fix what every other resource led me to believe was a fuse issue. Yours was the last piece of info I decided to read before throwing in the towel...AND SONOFAGUN IT WORKED! Thank you so much. I've now given my trusty old DS to my daughter and she's beyond thrilled!

  • Alexandra Saunders

I CANT BELIEVE THIS WORKED!!!! I was online about to buy another one and thought, what the heck I'll give this a try!!!!! I am so so so so so happy!! Thank you for your tip!!!

  • Anonymous May 25, 2019

Hello hello! It's currently 2019, but I've opted to comment anyway, simply because of how SHOOK I AM!

My old DS lite, which I spent over a thousand hours playing Pokemon Diamond Version on, started having this issue several years ago. I was heartbroken. I had played so much on this console, and it was something I took care of very very carefully, even as an irresponsible child.
When I encountered the issue, I genuinely couldn't understand what I had done wrong. Had I played it too much? Had I not charged it soon enough? What had ruined my prized possession?

Despite new consoles coming out, and me owning them, I have never given up on my old DS Lite. It had been with me through so many things, and I, being a very sentimental person, didn't want to give up on it. I bought new batteries, tried everything in my power. I even had my grandfather in on trying to figure it out, but we all came up blank.
Today while talking to a friend about my consoles, I mentioned this one, and decided to give it one more shot, to see if any new info had popped up. I was initially very skeptical about this one, because it seemed so odd, but branching off of your suggestion, I held it in contact with the place that had caused the light to come on. I held it there as carefully as I could. Each time, the light would stay on longer and longer, until I dared to put the charger fully into the port. It had stayed for a solid minute.
It is still on, and appears to be charging. I genuinely hope it turns on. I thought I'd never see it booting up again, and now I just might. Thank you for sharing this, very odd, yet very helpful solution.

I should note that as of now, about 10 minutes later, my console still won't turn on, but I'll be trying again in a few hours.

  • Anonymous May 27, 2019

Update. It DID turn on, and is working like nothing had ever happened.

  • helen lis

my ds lite was working fine since 2011 until yesterday, when it stopped turning on and the exact same this was happening: it wouldnt charge, but if i put just the tip of the charger the orange light would flash for a second. i tried doing what you did, so i kept repeatedly and quickly pushing and pulling just the tip of the charger for a minute and then it worked!!! it is charging AND turning on. it fixed the problem as soon as i tried doing that! i am so shocked!! does anybody know what the problem even was?? was it a blown fuse? what even happened go my ds lite?? i thought it had broken it because the hinge is broken, and i tried using glue to fix it so i was wondering if some cables were pulled or if glue somehow got inside it, but inserting the tip in and out very quickly fixed my ds lite!

This amazing trick is still working in 2021! Still, I'd like to know if it would make sense to replace the battery altogether?

It is most likely a blown F1 fuse. M3wiki.com has a great tutorial (just do a search for "fuse") on how to repair it (or 'them', it could also be your F2 fuse -- but going by just what you've stated it's likely your F1.. Test them both, though, just to be sure). Each fuse is labeled on the PCB board as such. All you'll need to do is bridge the contacts with a bead of solder.
It could also be one of your screens causing the problem. If you've replaced one recently, the likely culprit is the smallest ribbon cable that connects your screen to the PCB board. If not inserted correctly, the same symptoms will occur. Make sure you insert the tiny ribbon ON TOP OF the black locking mechanism, not underneath it (though it Will insert underneath, but there will Not be contact).

Either scenario is a fairly easy and inexpensive fix (check out DealExtreme.com for parts and tools),

I just took the battery out and held the "power on" button for about 1 minute. Then I put the battery back in and it works fine now.

I did what Traderdmb did and it fixed it! I did take the battery out completely, blew out the compartment with some compressed air, then before putting the battery back in, with the ds plugged in, held power on for a good twenty seconds. Put battery back in turned it on, woohoo, red charging light and ds powered right up, it is now working perfectly. Thanks!

This is a hardware issue. Can only be fixed through Nintendo.

  • Anonymous May 13, 2008

Tried fixing one with a different battery and different AC adapter, no luck.

  • Anonymous May 13, 2008

Turns out this is probably blown internal fuses. It's a relatively easy fix if you're good with a soldering iron, and there are tutorials online about how to disassemble the DS and perform the fix.

However, it completely removes the fuse(s), so the system is basically unprotected and will become bricked/useless if a similar instance were to occur.

If you're in warranty, get with Nintendo. If you're out of warranty and feel comfortable doing stuff like that, go for it. I personally am not that great with a soldering iron and performed the fix successfully.

Just Google 'DS Lite Blown Fuse' and the first link is what I used.

I had two times the problem, that I could not charge my DS Lite. The first time the orange LED keeps off when putting in the charging-cable.
The solution was to bridge the F1-fuse.
Now the orange LED flashed once when I plugged in the cable and then did go out and I could not turn on my DS Lite.
The solution was to bridge the fuse F2.

This is surelly a hardware problem in the main board and WOULD be caused by blown fuses like F1 and F2.

But that is not always the solution, and you can have good fuses and still Orange Light.

Worst scenario when you find water damage (i.e. a white powder over the circuit board).

So dont get dissapointed if the solution is not easy as only soldering a jumper over the fuses. You might need a new main board.

Orange light goes on and off... There's 3 thing that can gave you that trouble. First of all, it can be the coil just under your power switch. ( really thin solder) Usually it happen when the DS lite falls down. second thing... Blown fused see the F1 and F2 continuity. the Third thing can be the top screen ribbon. You need to change that screen if that happens. Usually a small transistor beside on the right of the game port ( upper one). If don't have any clue, send an email to [email protected] for a free repair analyse. Usually, theses problem can cost betwenn 35 to 60$ shipping not included (around 10$ shipping in Canada)

Hope that will help you

My problem was the same - flash of orange light then nothing when I tried to charge the DS.

Did anyone who is having this problem happen to buy their DS on ebay, or in any way from another country?

For me, my problem was that the charger was American and would not work in Australia. It was basically the same as an Australian charger, and fit into the socket and all.

But I took it to Electronics Boutique and they told me it was American and sold me an Australian charger, which works perfectly.

Same happened to me, could of sent it to nintendo but iv lost my reciept so they want to charge me £30 to fix it, cheaper option is to buy a NDS UGS-003 external charger (can pick them up for about £9 from Gameathlon.com) Charges the battery and works fine, only problem is i cant play and charge at the same time!

I had this same problem. IT WAS THE POWER CORD. The ORIGINAL cord was not frayed or anything. I purchased an IGO tip for nintendo ds and viola my system is charging again. I didn't invest in a nintendo cord because it is thin and apparently VERY fragile.

Good Luck

Got a really clean looking DS lite today for parts. Really great cosmetic condition but does the orange light on and off thing. The charge port is good, Ive temporarily fused f1 and f2 with solder blob (waiting on fuses in the mail). Ive reseated the charge port just in case. The inside of the port is very clean. The battery connection is good, I even replaced the L2 fuse by the power button. Still the exact same behavior.. Orange light on and off for 1 second. Im a but stumped at this point.

I opened my battery compartment up and found the battery had leaked and bits of the black outer coating where stuck to the inside of the ds. I'm planing on replacing it, if you're out of warranty it doesn't hurt to take a look.

I had the same thing happen to my ds lite, and I only had it for 8 months. I thought it was the battery so i went to change it and the battery melted away so i pulled out the melted rubber/plastic. i put in a new battery and cleaned it and eveything but the orange light just stayed on a little longer. it still wouldnt turn on though. i mailed my ds in to nintendo and it was good as new with a new battery in 2 weeks. I got it back 2 days before i got gh-on tour.

Mine does the same. just doesn't turn of full stop! it had to break just after the warranty has ended.

NINTENDO DS LITE WON'T CHARGE OR POWER ON

Each time you charge your battery, the charge capacity is decreased. After a large amount of charges, the capacity is decreased to an amount only enough to turn on a/the screen(s) for a second. Try getting a new battery.

Nintendo dslite wont turn on.tried charging it wit 3 different charges and it still wont charge

Ensure that you are properly recharging the battery.

1. Insert the small end of the adapter into the external extension connector (labeled "5.2V=IN") on the back of the Nintendo DS Lite, just next to the SLOT 1 Game Card opening.

2. Swing the prongs on the AC adapter until they lock into place, then insert it into a standard (120 volt) outlet.

The plug should be mounted vertically or on a floor outlet (such as a power strip).

3. Once the adapter is properly inserted, the unit will begin to charge (the orange charging light will display).

4. Once the DS Lite is fully charged, the orange charge light will go off.

Check the AC Adapter for damage (such as bent prongs or split wires). If you see damage to the AC Adapter, purchase a replacement from Nintendos Online Store.

Try plugging the AC Adapter into another wall outlet. Its possible the outlet is not working properly and has not been charging the Nintendo DS Lite.

If you are unable to get power to your Nintendo DS Lite, despite trying to properly recharge the unit, then your system will need to be repaired.

Nintendo offers convenient repairs, fast turnaround times and, for all systems repaired, a new one-year manufacturer's warranty.
