Canon 450D - Error 99 only when flash pops up

Hello, I have the same problem as posted by Renee (pasted below). I followed your instructions to the letter, and was able to isolate that it is the flash that won't work. Is there anything I can do to reset the flash?
Thanks.

Canon EOS digital rebel XSi / 450D. Canon 18-55 lens.

Accidently had my finger holding down the built in flash when it was popping up. Then when I tried to take picture on auto, the flash pops up fine but screen shows "busy" then err 99. on and off, changed battery. Still won’t work properly.

Camera takes non-flash pictures fine.

SOURCE: Canon 450D, ERROR 99 only when flash pops up

Err 99 usually means your lens contacts are dirty either on the lens itself or on the camera.

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

SOURCE: CANON EOS REBEL XSI 450D BODY WHEN TAKING A

Unfortunately, the Error 99 code is a catch-all code that means an UNKNOWN error has occurred. Because of this, it is difficult to pin down exactly what is causing the problem.

It could be a fault with either the camera (main circuit board, software, shutter mechanism etc.) or even the lens.

For starters, I would make sure that the lens electrical contacts are clean and the lens is mounted correctly and fully locked home. If you have a spare lens, try that also.

Next, I would reformat the memory card (do this in camera). If you have a spare memory card, try that also.

Check that the battery contacts are clean, and also the contacts of any external hardware such as vertical grips.

If none of these solve the problem, the only option left is to take it to a Canon service agent :-(

Hope this helps,

Matt

When i on my Canon EOS 450D camera it says error 99 turn off and on the camera or re install the battery how can fix this problem

The error 99 code has different sources, to identify it do this:

Remove the Lens, and try shooting at various speed high (1/1000 or more) then at more normal ones 1/15, 1/50 etc.
If you see the error 99 then contact canon this is a problem wit the camera.
In this case contact Canon directly.

If you still don' have the error message, then put back the lens and try shooting at different apertures (for a lens the error 99 correspond with an aperture problem)
try every aperture. If the problem appears then, clean the lens contacts both on the camera and on the lens.

If the problem is still there, contact the lens brand, you certainly have a blocked or sticky aperture.

Hope this helps.

I am getting this message on my EOS 450d, (camera's built in flash pop up was obstructed turn the power switch to off and on again). I have done this several times the flash wont pop up - can you please...

Sometimes the pop-up flash on the EOS range of cameras can get stuck. The EOS family have a very tiny micro switch under one blade of the flash hot-shoe.

Get a toothpick and manually pop the switch. It should clear your error, too.

Good Luck.

I can help you fix the BUSY Error or Error 99 of your Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D.

Installation of this Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D firmware version 1.06 update will solve these problems:
  1. Some cameras may exhibit a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor does not display, the shutter does not release, and the BUSY indication remains lit in the viewfinder.
  2. The message, "Err 99 Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to<OFF> and <ON> again or re-install the battery", appears on the camera's LCD monitor, and after the above operation is carried out,the LCD monitor displays in a language that is different from the actual language setting.
See the firmware instructions and download the firmware upgrade by following these Fixya Tips :

  1. Follow this link to download a pdf version of the firmware installation instruction guide.
  2. Follow this link to download the Windows Version of the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D firmware version 1.06 update.
  3. Follow this link to download the MAC version of the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D firmware version 1.06 update.

Occasionally I get 'ERROR 5' appear on the display on my EOS 450D - it is suggested that the pop-up flash is being impeded, but I know that it isn't. What is happening?

This is a common canon mechanical error.

Most of there SLRS do this the release inside the pop up flash hangs either due to weak spring or release catch itself. If it hangs for even a split second you get error code.

Try This.
  1. Clean Flash Release & Apply wd-40 with a q-tip to moving parts. DO NOT SPRAY INTO CAMERA. Use oil lightly.
  2. Or Assist flash when it tries to p up by lifting on flash gently. Maybe one day canon will fix this problem.
PS this happens to even Brand new Canons.
