• bevalicious Nov 21, 2008

I got this yesterday Garmin Nuvi 205W and it worked fine last night. This am it reset itself or something and was acting weird but map still appeared. Turned on later and got that same message. I don't know what to do but I am returning it bc I bought it for a trip to LA this Thanksgiving and this won't do me any good.

  • Anonymous Nov 30, 2008

before i tried to add additional maps to my nuvi 200, i took a backup of all the files, then used the mapsource to add the maps only to get the same message saying that the maps details cannot be found,

i can still retrieve the old map by simply copying back the old files from the backup, but that means i cannt add more maps

Garmin sent me an email to update my maps, after updating I have this problem.
Garmin sucks. I couldn't find any instructions to do the update and the usability of their site and update tools is horrific.

  • Anonymous Apr 13, 2009

My Garmin Nuvi 200 was working fine, but as soon as i updated map it said stated "no detailed map found, your nuvi cannot work without it". What should I do?

  • rachaelf79 Apr 17, 2009

I started having this problem yesterday afternoon after the free update. Called and the lady sent me 2 unlock codes via email with instructions to "fix" the unl file. No matter what variation (tried a lot) the codes did not work to fix the problem.

Called again this morning, waited 20 mins for a rep who says the file size for my gmapprom.img file (1,152,704 KB) is too big, so they put too many maps into the GPS automatically. She transferred me to another department which handles this and have a 50min hold.... hopefully I'm not wasting an hr 1/2+ of my time for nothing.

You'd think if this problem has been being reported for at least a month now that they'd have removed this bad update.

  • db from nc Apr 18, 2009

Exact same issue as the others. Received our new Garmin 205W, followed the instructions to receive the updated maps and when the process was finished, was rewarded with the same "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" message.

Of course Garmin support is closed on the weekends and their web-support doesn't seem to fix the issue. In fact, I can't even move on from this message no matter how many times I "tap" the screen.

    Will follow-up if I find a fix.

  • Anonymous Apr 19, 2009

No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" message. nuvi 200, bought yesterday, tried the free update today. I am going to return this to store and get a refund. Garmin guys should pay up.

  • Anonymous Apr 19, 2009

Same problem. Just bought a 205 and wanted to update my maps before I forgot and let > 60 days pass (like I did on my wife's 200) and have Garmin say "tough luck, no maps for you!". Now I can't use the device at all. I'm just glad I was not relying on using this device for travel any time soon.

    @db from nc...
Press and hold the error message "button" for a few seconds, an "OK" button will appear that will let you clear the error screen.

same problem as everybody else-nothing seems to work

  • Anonymous Apr 21, 2009

my garmin is saying no data aviable?????????????

  • Anonymous Apr 21, 2009

I have tried everything in this thread, and have been on the line with Garmin multiple times - NOTHING helps!

  • bascombe2 Apr 22, 2009

    Same problem.

  • monarch00 Apr 23, 2009

I just bought the GPS. Worked until I updated it. Got this message;"No detailed maps found that support routing. the nuvi cannot be used without them." It looks like I'll return it to the store.

  • Anonymous Apr 25, 2009

Same problem, tried solution 10 but didnt work. I just downloaded the software, if this has been an issue for months Garmin should already have it resolved by now.

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2009

Same problem after updating...same error message. So far, nothing has fixed it. My nuvi 205 is now a brick!!!

  • PYHINCORPORA Apr 26, 2009

AFTER UPDATING MAPS I GET MESSAGE GARMIN NUVI 200 SAYS NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND THAT SUPPORT ROUTING

    WHAT CAN I DO?

  • KoolGirl Apr 27, 2009

    SAME THING!

I got an email saying I had a "free" update available and it took a LONG time to download and install it but no error messages installing, in fact it said it installed fine.

Now when I turn on the Garmin Nuvi 200 - "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them"

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Notice to users with this problem. You can not use the unlock file from another Nuvi. Each unlock code is unique and based upon the unit's internal ID number. No two units have the same ID number, so an unlock code that works for one Nuvi can not be used to correct this problem in another Nuvi.

From the Garmin web site:
Question: What should I do if my Garmin nuvi / zumo displays the message “No Detailed Maps That Support Autorouting.”?
Answer: Please follow these steps to troubleshoot the error message:
Checking the unit:

  1. Hold your finger down on the screen until the message “No Detailed Maps That Support Autorouting” disappears.
  2. If you get a locked maps message following this error please remove any SD cards in the device and skip down to the instructions for “Getting your unlock codes”.If you did not get a locked maps message then please select tools>settings>map>mapinfo button.
  3. Check the box next to the mapping product City Navigator and you should no longer get the “No Detailed Maps That Support Autorouting” message.

I was having the same problem. NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND SUPPORT ROUTING & SO ON. I called Garmin this morning & I thought I would be on the phone forever with the gentleman. But I was on for less then 10 minutes. The guy asked me to connect my Nuvi to the computer using a usb cable, then asked me to go into my computer & look for the device/drive that my Garmin is using. He then prompted me to open the file that says Garmin & asked me if there was this file that said gmapprom.unl. I told him no & then he sent me the file through an email. I had to open the file & get it into the Garmin file. Then he asked me to disconnect my Nuvi from my computer & it started right up & the problem was gone. If you do have the same problem I am willing to email you the file he sent me if you would like because there is no possble way to get the file from just searching on the computer. Let me know. -Kathy

Do you know why this problem is occurring? It seems to be happening to a lot of nuvi owners. I was sitting in a parking lot of hospital when i received the "NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND" massage. I have never updated my nuvi 205, I thought that may have been the reason. any thoughts?
    Thanks a Bunch, Johnnie

The file she has WILL NOT WORK for your GPS. It was created specifically for her unit using her internal serial number. Every unit has a different serial number so the file data will be different.

MY GARMIN NUVI 200W NOT WRONG AND SAY NODETAILED MAPS FOUND THAT SUPPORT ROUTING. THE NUVI CANNT BE USED WITHOUT THEM

  • Johnnie91 Sep 23, 2010

I received a prompt on my GPS (GARMIN NUVI 205W) "No detailed maps found that support routing". So my GPS was a totally inoperable, basically a turd sitting on my dashboard. This happened while I was at a Doctor’s appointment. It was a good thing I knew how to get home. I have lost all confidence in GARMIN. I routinely travel up and down the East Coast I would hate to have thing quit while I was on vacation or when I really needed it. I’m not sure this isn’t some ploy to force me to map updates? I started to contact GARMIN T to obtain the unlock codes and get the GPS working again. But how do I know this thing isn’t “loose” it’s maps again on my way to Montana? I have had it for a few years. I guess it’s time to buy a new GPS (certainly not a GARMIN ! )

I have a nuvi 200 i bought 08 thanksgiving sale... didnt use it for a few months... knew all the routes in my previous city... now when moving to a new city i needed it badly but crappy thing would say NO DETAILS MAPS message... tried everything you all had suggested like resetting, updating software and registering the dam thing... but to no avail...

Finally i sent an email to Garmin Customer Support... I couldnt have called them as i am at work 7-6 weekdays and Garmin guys work 8-5 Eastern...

My email to Garmin:
Subject:
"No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them"
Message Body:
When I switch my Nuvi 200 on it says "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them". Please send me unlock codes with instructions. I am surprised this is such a big problem and your company has posted no solution to this. There are so many people complaining about the same problem on the internet. I am in a new city and this piece of junk won't work. Please do a call back if you can't tackle this satisfactorily ASAP. Your customer support works only 8am-5pm CST. How can i call in for 2-3 hours while I'm at office?
Their Reply:

13) Disconnect the USB cable, then power the GPS on…..

1. Extract the downloaded file Garmin_RMU_2010B.exe using 7zip(7zip.org) or WINRAR.

5. Right click on the Shortcut to Setup.exe file and Click Properties
6. In the target line add "-build_map_image 006-D0783-04" at the end of setup.exe". For example the end would look like xxx\Setup.exe" -build_map_image 006-D0783-04
7. Click Apply and OK.
8. Double click on the Shortcut to Setup.exe the map file will be built. Leave the Window open till completion of all steps.
9a. Windows XP: Click on Start>Run, then type in %Temp%. Another window will open.
9b. Windows Vista: Click on the Start Button, in the Start Search, type %temp%. Another window will open.
10. The file is placed in subfolder named 006-D0783-04.
11. Copy the gmapprom.img file from the folder to the Garmin folder on the Nuvi. Overwrite the existing file.

After a ttempting to fix this on my own and failing, I finally called tech support. After a half hour waiting on the phone, I got connected to a person who said that this was a software problem and transferred my call to that department. Then I waited another half hour, and finally got the software tech. He knew right off the bat what was wrong. I let him control my computer, and he did all the work, even waiting patiently while the software was downloading and installing, exept at he very end when the maps were being installed to the GPS. I don't think I could have solved this on my own searching on the internet. Now my GPS is working.

Spoke with Garmin software guy today. He said there is an error with the download that some are experiencing. It's affecting the 200 and 205. The problem is that it's not giving you the chance to select the lower 49 states, which you need to do for these models. They are in the process of fixing it and a new download is supposed to be available tomorrow. He went into my computer and accessed my Garmin and deleted gmapprom.img and gmapprom.unl and said all I needed to do is download when the fix is up. I sure hope so. Holding for help to Garmin takes forever!

You must call Garmin, wait 30 minutes for a rep, ask that rep for the software department, wait an hour or more for software department, then they will connect to your computer remotely and fix it. There is no other way!!!!

This is easy. You need to run up your map source software and tell it to transfer maps to your device. You will need to use the map selector tool and pick the maps.

If the transfer doesn't work, it is because you have a mapsupp file in your Nuvi. THis is a common error that happens when you update maps without deleting the old maps first. Message me if you are still having problems.

If the message "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" is displayed after turning on an automotive device, or "No Map Data Available" displays when searching for a destination, there may be a problem with the device's mapping files.
To correct this problem, follow the steps below:

  • If you are receiving the message "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing", and it cannot be dismissed by pressing OK or back, press and hold your finger on the message to clear it.
  • Ensure the map is enabled on the device
    • To see which maps are loaded and ensure they are enabled:
      1. TouchSettings
      2. TouchMap
      3. TouchInfo
    • Within this section you will be able to see all of the mapping loaded onto the device. If there is no checkmark next to the map(s) listed, touch the box to add a check. This will enable the mapping on the device.
  • If the maps were installed to a memory card, ensure the memory card is formatted properly
If the issue occurs immediately after a map update, ensure that Garmin Express is up to date andreinstall the maps.
If the device is being updated on a Windows computer, be sure to safely eject your device from the computer after the update has completed. Even though the update appears to be complete, the "write-caching" feature on some computers may not have completely built or transferred the map to the device. Ejecting the device before disconnecting it can prevent this problem from occurring.
To safely remove the device:
  1. Press the Windows key + E
  2. Right-click the Garmin device
  3. Click Eject (If there is no Eject option present, then the device does not need to be ejected, and can be unplugged normally.)

Solution #10 worked for me, but I had to make a slight change because I'm using a Mac. I initially used Textedit and saved as a RTF to make the text file but that didn't work. I re-saved it as a Word file through Textedit and that didn't work. I next used Microsoft Word and saved it as a "Plain Text .txt" file. That was the solution.

Ok i worked out why my nuvi lost it's map details after the free map update. This time after i backed up all the files to the pc, I deleted the old gmapprom.img file from the nuvi device , then I unrar'd my map update file to my desktop and run the setup.exe file as instructed from the windows folder. After an hour or so of updating/transferring I to enter an address and sucess at last, so i assume it was an error in automatically extracting the files..

I have a Nuvi 255 W and I had the same error message after updating maps using Garmin Express on a SD card. I called Garmin support and got the issue resolved. My issue was with the SD card format. Before installing maps I formatted the SD card to NTFS file format. Garmin support told me to format the SD card to FAT32 and reinstall the maps. I did exactly as they said and my issue was resolved. Updates installed successfully and the GPS is now working fine.

I mentioned about the unlock code solution which many people said above to the garmin support person and he told me they are not fixing this error message using the unlock code work around.

Fantastic easy solution! I thought I had to re-install all my maps as other solutions instructed, but none of that was needed....10-second solution and everything was back to normal.... for garmin at least.

Today I bought my Nuvi 250T, updated the map, and got the same problem: "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them"
But! my gmapprom.unl was present, with the right code. I tried a lot of things related to that file, without success. So, I took a deep breath, went to the garmin webpage, and ate again the hours of installation of the map.
Now my GPS works like a charm :)

Howdy...

Almost all solutions works... in most cases you forgot to add unlock codes to MapSource program and nuvi can not find unlock keys needed to open maps.

Create file gmapprom.unl and enterall unlock codes - copy to garmin folder of nuvi and that's it...

I used Solution #3. It worked for me if I copied only the one unlock code (about 25 alpah-numeric characters). Don't copy the other code or the word "unlock code"...only copy and paste the code into notepad. It mentions this in the solution, but it is key that you change the pull-down to all files instead of a text file. Check the file name in the Garmin folder. If you see "gmapprom.unl.txt," it will not work. It must read gmapprom.unl.

GARMIN NUVI 200 SAYS NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND THAT SUPPORT ROUTING after loading 2009 maps, the problem is there is not enough memory in the unit. I spent hours on the phone with garmin and documented what they did. So for statrers when you start to load the new software and don't see an option to selesct LOWER 48 STATES.. stop the disc only displays option based on memory in the garmin. you will need to free up some memory in your garmin mine was a nuvi 200. the tech went in ans deleted all the files in Voice except the English american (keep these- 2 files) next he deleted all the help files except american english file folder. and finally deleted all but one in the vehicle folder, I kept the truck file.. once complete load the disc back in and see if you now have the options to load lower 48 states if so selecte it and go through the process, you should be good to go after it all completes.

I got the no detailed maps message after upgrading to 5.0 of my nuvi 255 as well. After a lot of attempts I have a working installation of the map update : City Navigator Europe NT 2010.10 Limited, Deluxe All Regions, Apr 09. I initially received the error "cannot communicating with the garmin server" during the installation of the map upgrade.

I can't reproduce the deciding step but these are the actions that led to a working device:
- cleaned op the C drive: as it writes a lot of data to it
- Start > Run > %temp% (clean all files)
- uninstalled all maps, mapsource , Garmin USB, including registry entries ! , reboot after this action
- renamed downloadem map ugrade to rar and got it unzipped with 7zip
- deletede not used voices from map /Voice on the nuvi
- run setup.exe, followed instructions, (I went to sleep), make sure your computer does not go to standby! You can now make a backup of the gmapprom.img from %temp%
- check gmapprom.unl in the /Garmin folder on the nuvi, make sure it only contain the 25 digit unlock code (mygarmin), in my case it contained de product key and the unlock code concatenated in one line. That is noty working. Corrected it in notepad. And it worked again.

Good luck !

Hi all,

I have a solution to this. It's not an ideal solution, but it's a solution.

I just bought a nuvi 200 for my dad, seeing as I was very happy with mine. Tried to update his and got the dreaded "No Detailed Maps Found ..." error.

This is how I solved it:

1. plugged my nuvi into the pc
2. saved an image file of the "Garmin" removable drive that appears in "my computer" list.
3. unlugged my nuvi
4. plugged in my dads nuvi.
5. formatted the "Garmin" removable drive to FAT
6. copied the previously made image from my nuvi to newly the "Garmin" removable drive (my dad's nuvi)
7. deleted "gmapprom.img" from my dad's nuvi.
8. obtained an already unlocked garmin map (gmapsupp.img).
9. put the map onto an SD card
10. inserted the card into my dad's nuvi.

Dad's nuvi now working.

Hope this helps people.

99% credit goes to the solution #10 author. The first time I did it, the solution did not work for me. I found the folder referenced in solution #10 but could not find the map file referred to. You have to click on "next" on the Garmin Map Update program that starts after you double click the shortcut you created in solution #10. It will then show you a message that it is creating the map file. What for a long time while the map is built, after which you should see a screen showing that the map was built and where to find it. Thanks #10!

I got around this by downloading mapinstall from wwww.garmin.com and running it. I had to select a region small enough that wouldn't exceed my nuvi memory, I picked my home city. Once installed I disconnected the muvi from the pc and fired it up. It gave me a loading maps message, safety warning, etc and then said 'can't unlock maps'. I hit OK and then I was able to get detailed maps of my area and other cities.

SOURCE: GARMIN NUVI 200 SAYS NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND THAT SUPPORT ROUTING

The downloaded map file (ex: "Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010C.exe") contains all of North America, and you must select the correct subsection (ex: "Lower 49 States+PR") that you purchased, which is listed on your Garmin myMaps page (My.Garmin.com).

I am a GPS newbie as well and selected "all of North America" when installing my free nuvi 205 map update. A mistake that's too easy to make, esp. considering Garmin still has very little info about selecting the correct map subsection listed on their support site.

You do NOT need to re-download the huge map file, thankfully, but you must re-install (30+ min) to choose the correct map subsection.

"Bad on Garmin, IMHO for not making important details like that clear to us new owners." My thoughts exactly.

You can download new maps..........free......................but..........

I had this problem last year with my garmin 200 and when I called they said that I was out of the 60 day time window for a free map upgrade but they would give it to me anyway. They gave me detailed instructions on how to download a new map free of charge but they didnt explain which selection replaced what I already had on mine.
As a result, I downloaded the wrong maps and have much less detail. Even though its the "2009" version, its less acurate than my old maps were. But its worth a shot, better than paying for them.

After the update i deleted gmapprom.img and then created my own map using the garmin MapInstall program. start>programs>garmin>mapinstall

Garmin Nuvi 200 Maps Disappeared

Contact Garmins Tech support hot Line they will walk you through the process and if they can't fix it over the phone they will send you a disk that will completely fix the "NO detailed maps found that support routing" I have contacted them with the same problem and the disc was free of charge.

GARMIN NUVI 200 SAYS NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND THAT SUPPORT ROUTING

You can download new maps..........free......................but..........

I had this problem last year with my garmin 200 and when I called they said that I was out of the 60 day time window for a free map upgrade but they would give it to me anyway. They gave me detailed instructions on how to download a new map free of charge but they didnt explain which selection replaced what I already had on mine.
As a result, I downloaded the wrong maps and have much less detail. Even though its the "2009" version, its less acurate than my old maps were. But its worth a shot, better than paying for them.
