I have had this error on my 3 year old Sony A1E and it has resulted in glitched picture and audio, despite not showing a poblem whilst recording. It came up with C:31:23 error. Start of the tape seemed ok and the end seemed to get pixellated. A friend said the PD170 had the same issue and had to have her tape heads changed. I've tried cleaning mine but problem still there. I'm looking at getting new NXCAM as I've spent a lot of money last year getting it fixed.

These error code means that there is a problem with the take up reel. The tape up reel is responsible for "taking up the tape slack" as the tape is running. Try resetting the camcorder. This is done by removing the battery or ac power, wait 10 seconds, reapply the battery or ac power and try again. however..seems this usually happens when the tape has run out of time whilst recording, you have changed the tape....and your re-inserting the tape again for transfer trying to rewind it correct?.....either way, pull the battery off, have the power chord ready plugged in as the only power source, close the tape door...and just as it loads pull the power chord out as you just hear it try to wind up....then wait a few seconds, (your on switch is in VTR or VCR mode......quickly put the power chord back into the camera and repeatedly overide the commands by hitting the << REW button or FFW>> the camera should have bypassed the error alert and start winding the tape....just let it wind the tape for about 20 seconds...hit stop....pless PLAY > you should have normal function again. and go to where you wanted the tape to be.

Sometimes it's a simple thing as a tape that has reached the end and the deck cant read it. It happened to me. After spending two hours removing and replacing the tape, i put in a new tape and it worked just fine.
Sometimes it from cleaning the head.....there s a reset button at the bottom of the remote, try hitting that button and pointing at the camcorder....
The camcorder recognizes that the head was cleaned ad needs to be reset.

SOURCE: Sony Handycam Digital 8: won't accept tape

I was having the exact same problem with my sony handycam. I actually came across this website looking for the answer and noticed many people having the same problem but there was no solution to it.

I just happened to go to the sony website and decided to watch the tutorial on setting the camera back to the factory settings. It actually fixed the problem! I don't know if this will work for everyone or even how long it will work, but I figured it was worth a try. Good luck!

SOURCE: reinsert cassette message

Believe it or not, after having the same problem "re-insert cassette" and "reattach power source", and after talking to Sony and them telling me it would be $111.00 to repair, I hit mine with the palm of my hand twice on each side and twice on the back by the battery and it actually worked--haha Go Figure!!

Tape mechanism problems can be quite complicated but they can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

The heads are dirty and you are getting sufficient digital dropout to cause the blue screen. Try a cleaning tape. If that fails to correct hte problem, then the alignment needs to be checked by an authorized service center.

I have experienced the same problem, which may well have the same cause. A local electronics shop told me parts for Sony are only available direct from Sony - so I guess you and I will have to contact a Sony dealer
