I have cable internet through Time Warner and their modem connects directly to my Dell Dimension 8200 PC. I cannot connect to the internet and I am told it is because my computer will not read the ip address. It keeps coming up with an ip address starting with 192 which I was told means there is a router connected, but there is not. Any suggestions of how to fix.

Just had a new router put in by Time Warner Cable and they synced all our computers to a MAC address. We have 4 computers on this (2 desktops) and 2 laptops. Only one is having a problem, the Dell...

I would need a few more details to really get to the heart of this but the first thing I would do is connect this Dell to the router with an actual cable, if only temporarily. See if there are still issues when directly connected. Depending on answer to that you would know if the wireless is some how responsible or if there is some other cause. If there are no issues with a direct cable I would say it is the wireless card or signal. You could a try different wireless hardware on the dell or switch channels on the wifi router to see if that helps. I can't think of a reason why four computers on the same router would respond differently to a specific site.

Dell Dimension 4700C Desktop PC, internet issue.

Try and test the computer and modem connection by hooking it up directly by an ethernet cable..

If the internet connection stays solid when cabled up..

Then try either changing or removing the wep or wpa encryption on your wireless network, and seeing if that allows the computer to stay connected.

Also try disabling the firewall on your computer, and also on your modem.

Router Won't connect to internet

The cable modem sometimes register the hardware MAC address of the connected device. So your PC may be registered and it won't accept the router now. Connect the WAN port of the router to your cable modem and power the modem off and on again. It should re-register the connected device and now your router should work.

Not recognized by cable modem

Turn everything off for 2 minutes, cable modem, router and pc.

Turn on modem and wait 2 minutes for the modem to sync to TW.
Turn on router after 2 mins and wait until the router syncs with the modem.
Turn on PC
It sounds like your router lost its connection to the cable modem, which happens from time to time. TW will not help with your router. I worked for a cable co and the router and modem losing sync was the at least 70% of the calls. FYI cable doesn't use DSL,just the phone co.

Reconnecting phone line

Because the new computers from Dell don't come with modems. You have to ask for them. I found that out yesterday when I was purchasing a new computer for work. Quite frankly I haven't seen a modem on a computer in years.

If there is a modem on your computer it should be a card with two phone jacks. One for line and one for the phone. If you are going to use a dial up connection take the phone cord from the line and plug it into the phone jack marked line. If you dont have a card with two jacks next to each other then you don't have a modem. If you already have a network in the house you can run a network cable to the router.
