I left the player on all night until it ran out of power the next morning. It was at that time I pluged the USB cable to the unit and recharged it from my laptop.
I checked the "Hold" switch several times and it was not engaged when I noticed the problem. What ever the problem was allowing the unit to completely drain itself of power and then recharging it solved my problem.
It sounds the the hold switch is on..The Sansa c250 Hold Switch is located on the side of the device, and is used to prevent any accidental
operation. Once the Hold Switch is moved to the lock position, all function keys will be disabled.
Buttons on the Sansa c250 will not operate when the Hold Switch is active.
When you say that you plugged it on the USB to the device, do you have the device connected to the computer? and if so it should say connected.. meaning that the device is charging...during that time you cannot do anything on the device itself..when you unplug the device from the computer does it show the lock or does it say connected? When you say that you plugged it on the USB to the device, do you have the device connected to the computer? and if so it should say connected.. meaning that the device is charging...during that time you cannot do anything on the device itself..when you unplug the device from the computer does it show the lock or does it say connected?

Is the orange color above the Lock switch visible on the left side of the player ? Then it is in Lock position (factory set to Lock).
To unlock: Switch the Lock switch upwards (orange color not visible).
Next before first use, charge the player for 3.5 hours on a computer
with the provided USB cable.
mp3 players do not need software if you are using xp or vista. JUST Connect it to your computer uing a USB cable and itwill be shown as a rremovable drive. Just copy and paste files to your player thats all!

2 Suggestions:
1) It may be that the battery isnt charged, let the unit charge fully
2) If that doesnt work, its probably time to send the unit back to sandisk
