Our top load washer Kenmore 22642100 was in the middle of spin cycle and draining and then slowly made a whiring sound like an engine slowing down and now will not spin or drain remaining water. It will fill and wash but not spin or drain and has about 1 inch of water remaining. It will turn on but in the spin cycle make no noise at all any longer. Can you tell us what part is needed. My husband is going to try to fix himself.
My washer is a direct drive so I was told it does not have a belt? Is this a different type of belt and could this easily be repaired by my husband? My washer is a direct drive so I was told it does not have a belt? Is this a different type of belt and could this easily be repaired by my husband?

Try the 'drain' portion of a few of the other cycles (heavy, perm. press, delicates) and see if it will drain/spin there. You can also try advancing the timer slowly through the 'spin' portion to see if it kicks in anywhere.
If it will rinse and spin in the other cycles, you most likely have a bad timer.
Sounds like the pump is clogged or stripped out. It's mounted on the front of the motor in the middle of the bottom. There's only 2 clips and hoses that hold it on. These are known for stripping out in the middle. They are just plastic, but fairly easy to fix.
I have seen this problem numerous times on service calls. It sounds like you have a siphoning problem. The key symptom is the wash tub that continously attempts to fill, but cannot achieve the proper water level. This is often caused by not having an air gap on your drain line, improper placement of the drain hose, or a standpipe that is too small in diameter. The following link explains:
If you place the drain hose in the standpipe too far, or seal the top of the standpipe, this can cause a vacuum which will cause the symptoms you describe. A tell-tale sign will be a sucking noise as you pull the drain hose from the standpipe. Read through the link I provided. If this does not correct your problem please post back and let me know before you rate this solution. This way I can try to assist you further. I hope this corrects your problem.
sounds as if you have a lid lick/door switch issue, the machine is not recognizing the door being closed and for safety reasons will not enter spin/drain.. open anc\d close lid a few times slowly, cam you hear a "clicking noise" whe njust about closed?? id assume not replace teh lidswitch
