Hi! my mother borrowed this machine from a friend and she has only used oldschool sewing machines (without electricity) so she is really helpless with this one. i know some things but i haven't done any sewing since 7th grade, so without a manual i am a bit lost. i was hoping to get some basic info from someone.
here is a picture to help me with my questions: http://koti.welho.com/ilankine/singer.jpg
i need to know what the wheels marked 1 and 2 are. number 3 is the stitch length, isn't it? my mother and i noticed that the bottom tension could be off (? i am looking for terms in other posted problems, excuse any mistakes, english is not my native language - basically the bottom stitches look normal like this -------, but the top one is a straight line). how can we fix that? i could, of course, just try out all possible settings but that would take me forever so i was hoping someone might answer this. right now wheel number 1 is set to 4, wheel number 2 to 3 and the stitch length is 4.
thank you in advance for any advice you can give me! sorry for rambling. :D
I haven't seen this machine before but in general, the most common problem is the bobbin. Either it's not wound correctly, poor thread or put into the machine wrong. Other wise wheel number 3 looks like a stitch selection dial to me. Try turning it and see what happens to the needle. When you change from straight stitch to say zig zag it would move right or left. On dial #2 isn't there some writing? What does it say? In general there is no need to change the tension of the bottom thread unless you are sewing extreme fabrics such as leather and silk. What is the range of numbers on the dials? Try putting them in the middle of the range to see if it has an impact of the quality of the stitch. My bet is on the bobbin thread not being correct. Try taking it out and putting it in so that the thread is traveling into the bobbin case from the opposite direction. I'd try this after taking out all of the thread (if it came with the bobbin) and reloading it. A straight thread on the top happens when the top thread tension is too tight if I remember correctly. It is stronger than the bottom and doesn't move so to speak.
