You can try to uninstall and reinstall. Once you reinstall, make sure you update the game.

check playing with this disc on any other Xbox 360 connected to live, ideally the disc should not have problem since the problem you are facing could be with saving or downloading of the specific update required to play game online on xbox live which is mostly related to updated playlists.

If it still does not work, try erasing the saves for this particular game from your Xbox 360 HDD in case you are okay to forego the game progress / XP gained for the offline campaign play.

it is a good thing that you clean the disc,is there any visible scratches on the game disc?, if none, please do try another disc game that is available,check if the other game disc will have the same error message if it does,unfortunately it is the console but if other game disc work it may do happen that this is a disc issue

You will need to either repair the disc using a repair kit, find a game shop that repairs disc, or purchase a new copy of the game. You are getting a message saying that the disc is unreadable because the scratches prevent the laser from reading the data.

Eject the disc and have a look at the back to see if there are any scratches, markings, dirt, or anything else that might be preventing your console from reading it properly.

Well it is good that your tried the retail vendor for a refund, but in my experience they are worthless. Microsofts 1-800# is just as worthless. If activision is the games producer then they should be able to get you a redeemable code for the download. However for the disc, usually K-mart will replace with the receipt. Never have I heard that a game store to turn people away though. Unfortunately I have to suggest getting a hold of activision.

The laser in the xbox could have made that ring or perhaps the people you sent it to to fix it did. You can't do anything but buy a new one.

i had to exchange my xbox 360, for a new one.
and it now works fine, so you should probably stop trying to use the game, or exchange your 360.

Depending on when (and in what country) you bought your Xbox 360, you may just have a busted hard drive. Earlier generations are particularly difficult which is why Microsoft extended the "hardware failure" portion of the warranty.

If this is happening to multiple games you should be sure you are cleaning the discs very well with a fine linen cloth or something that will not scratch it. Remove all the debris from the disc and don't leave them in the sun or near sources of heat. Also you may want to get a can of air and spray out any dust that may be collecting inside the tray/lens inside the xbox.

If this is only happening to this one game, perhaps you have a corrupt file on the hard drive. Try deleting anything related to Call of Duty World at War from the memory and then putting the disc in.
