I have a Bernina 707. I believe the motor just started on fire. It was humming loudly and smoking. Can I replace the motor? Are they available? Can someone rework the motor? Bonnie McCartney

Motors can be replaced easily and are not too difficult to find. However, give a look at the belt. If the hand wheel isn't allowing the belt to move but the motor is trying to force the belt to move it will cause the belt to burn and smell bad. Check the hand wheel to see if it is moving freely. Anyway, check this before you replace the motor. If you replace the belt it must be adjusted by a bolt that holds the motor tight. While the motor is running slow move the motor in and out and side to side. You will notice the speed of the motor change as you do this. The motor speed will be at it's highest when you will tighten the bolt.

Your Bernina 707 can most likely be repaired. You can take it to a Bernina repair shop. Sometimes they can rob parts from donor machines. If you really like your Bernina and would like to keep it, it is probably worth checking out repair. Purchasing another machine of similar quality in good working condition could cost ~$300--in addition, you probably already have a lot of accessories for the machine which would work only on vintage Berninas made before ~1986. Search eBay and see what comes up for similar machines that have sold. Who knows, they may even be able to repair the motor... In my humble opinion, your 707 is a keeper if nothing else is wrong with it.

If you are very creative you can install a generic motor ~ $30 but you will have to create a bracket.

Yes you can have the motor replaced. You need to take to a certified repair center though.

I WOULDN'T BE SO ANXIOUS TO REPLACE THE MOTOR YET. MANY TIMES THE BELT WILL GET OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND CAUSE THE BELT TO SMELL BURNT AND THE NOISE WILL BE PRETTY LOUD. CHECK THE BELT AND WHILE IT IS ON SLOWLY TURN THE BELT WITH THE MOTOR (KEEP HANDS AWAY). THERE IS AN ADJUSTMENT FOR HOW MUCH PULL AND TO ALIGN THE BELT. IT IS EASY SO DON'T WORRY. NOW, TO GET TO THE BELT! LOOSEN THE OUTSIDE HANDLE ON THE WHEEL . LOOSEN THE SMALL SCREW AND CONTINUE TO UNSCREW THE HANDLE; REMOVE IT. NOW, LOOSEN THE INSIDE LUG AND TAKE OFF. REMOVE THE WHOLE HANDLE. THE BELT WILL FALL OFF. REPLACE THE BELT. REPLACE EVERYTHING. (BEFORE YOU START IT IS HELPFUL HOW MANY TIMES YOU TURN TO REMOVE). ONCE EVERYTHING IS REMOVED SLOWLY PUSH THE FOOT PEDAL. LOOSEN THE BELT ADJUST AND MOVE IT WHILE YOU PUSH ON THE FOOT PEDAL. IT WILL COME TO A POINT OF ITS FASTEST AND QUIETNESS REST. TIGHTEN THIS BOLT AND REPLACE EVERYTHING AND START SEWING.

Broken Bernina 708 started smoking? Any idea what is wrong with it?

Firstly, It's great that your using a surge plug. If it was smoking with the power On DO NOT USE IT! Smoke is one step short of actual fire!
Was it giving off a 'funny' smell as it smoked. Smoke usually means the electrics and/or the motor are starting to 'Burn Out'. This is possibly a serious issue. You will need to take it to a specialist repairer as they'll need to open the sewing machine up to find out why the electrics are heating up to a dangerous level.

I have a Bernina 1100D overlocker. The problem is that my foot is not on the peddle but the machine keeps working very slowly while humming. What is the problem pkease?

Take it for service. It could be a simple problem but it probably isn't good for the motor to be activated constantly. Also, it could be a possible fire hazard.

Bernina machine starts sewing anfmten stops or doesn't start at all.

Be sure that you regularly clean and oil your Bernina. If not oiled regularly, the old oil turns to varnish and actually freezes the parts. Some people believe something is wrong with the motor or foot control, when really it just needs some TLC to keep it running smoothly.

May be one of several issues--depends on the model Bernina. Could be a problem with the foot control. I had to replace a carbon brush in the foot control of my 930. (A new foot control could cost over $160!)

Or some machines (mostly older models, ie 830 Records) have carbon brushes on the motor that wear with age. Once they've worn down, they no longer make constant contact giving you the "intermittent" issue. I've replaced carbon brushes on some older Berninas--usually found somewhere around the motor (look for a screw or knob on the motor). You can buy replacements a lot of places. I've purchased them on eBay.

I have a Bernina 707 and it needs a new motor, are these still available.please

They do not make them anymore. Your only solution would be to a used one from a working machine with the same model number.

Bernina 707 wheel is hard to turn

If the handwheel on your Bernina 707 is hard to turn, it most likely needs a good cleaning and oiling. Old oil dries and tends to get gummy, causing the moving parts to be stiff.

1967 Bernina 707 Minimatic is not running freely

Have you been oiling the bearings per the guide? Try to isolate the upper mechanism versus the lower by rocking the handwheel and observing which causes the bind (take the bobbin and needle thread off to prevent jamming). You may have to remove some of the covers to see most of it. As long as no gearing becomes shifted or uncoupled, you should not cause trouble. Try taking the motor belt off to see if the motor itself may be binding. Good to see people keeping old, but still working machines running
