Hi, trying to sort my daughter's Zen Touch mp3 - It appears to be stuck in "recovery mode". Selecting any of the 4 options - just brings me bck to the "recovery mode" screen. Resetting has no impact. Any ideas??? Thanks, RobbieF
For anyone else who still have unusable devices and the device is not there for the firmware but it is for anything else do this:
1. Plug in the player.
2. Goto device manager remove it's drivers and remove USB Roots (dont worry they'll all reload)
3. Reboot and unplug the player.
4. After windows loads goto add/remove programs and uninstall windows media player. Select downgrade.
5. If it asks you to reboot do so.
6. Then locate c:\program files\creative and just manually delete the folder you can put it back on if you wish later but it's useless and outdated junk.
Now reboot. Plug the device in and install the firmware.
If this works as good for me as anyone else lemme know.
Dan
Hold player in one hand and bang it on your other hand. This worked for me when I was unable to reload firmware.
Thank you!!!! That solved my problem too!!!

My Zen was stuck in recovery mode and nothing I tried was getting me out of it. It wouldn't reboot so I tried to reformat it and that didnt work either....it just seemed to be completly frozen. I say an fix here saying to press the play button and turn on the creative at the same time. Now when I tried this the creative wouldn't start so i just released the play button and tried restarting again,,,,,and low and behold it started up and did started rebuilding. Im glad to say that its now back in action and I haven't lost any files. Worth a try if you cant get out of recovery mode.
Hi! I think you should try this (i've already tried it and it works):
1- Unplug your Zen from your Computer.
2-Turn off your Zen (if you can't do it, press the "Reset" button)
3- BEFORE turning on your Zen, press your "Play" button and hold it while you turn on.
4-When a format menu appears, select the "Format All" option (you'll loose all your Zen data).
5-When the format menu reapears, select the "Reboot" option and listo!
You have your Zen as new and should not have problem. Good luck!
Leave it on and unplugged from your computer, and wait till it goes off (battery runs down). Then push reset using a needle, may require several pushes. After that reconnect to your computer and let charge. This worked for me after I tried all else including downloading stuff from the creative Zen support website. I lost my music, pictures etc but i am glad I can still use it.
I tried all of the solutions mentioned here and elsewhere - reloading the firmware, rolling back media player etc but in the end, believe it or not it was the very brief solution posted by tools4fools that worked - simply banging it on my hand! i realise i was probably pretty lucky but that's all it took. my zen had been out of action for two years and it was a complete last ditch option but it worked and i'm over the moon. cheers, tools4fools!
I have got 40gig creative zen touch.I dont have drivers and software disk I have lost both I cant donload music from pc to creative zen touch please help me togo through this problem
Plug the device into a PC with "windows XP SP2" which is running windows media player 10
the problem lies on WMP11, in windows XP SP3, I can't downgrade it into WMP10
if you can somehow downgrade into WMP10, it should work
otherwise, just find a PC with XP SP2 with WMP10, install the jukebox driver, plug in the device and run firmware upgrade
*IT WORKS FOR ME*
=D
Follow the steps posted by rifth. It should work.
The only thing he forgot to explicitly mention is that you have uninstall everything that says Windows Media 11. This includes "Windows Media Player 11", "WMP 11 Runtime format " and all the windows updates on windows media player (check show updates on top).
If you forget to uninstall even one of the Windows media player software, it messes up the firmware upgrade.
Also, make sure you reboot when rifth says to reboot. It makes a difference.
After mine fell out of my pocket today, I too was stuck in the recovery mode. Attempting to "Format All" showed me a Hard Drive Error.
Mine turned out to be a stuck read/write head on the hard drive.
Here's what I did (READ ALL INFO BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS):
Remove battery.
Remove 2 tiny phillips screws for the rear cover
Remove 4 phillips screws located in the area around the battery.
Remove the Hard Drive from the Zen (Pry up gently near the corners at the USB port and headphone jack, then slide the HD up and out)
Keeping the Hard drive shiny side up:
Remove 6 philips screws from the edges of the hard drive.
Scrape the Fujitsu label off, and there's a white oval "thing" glued on.
Remove 1 phillips head screw from under the label.
Gently lift off the metal casing.
At the connection side of the disc is a small metal arm. Make sure this stays in place.
There's a metal arm up near the actual disc. Give this a little flick and see if it frees things up. Mine was stuck causing the HD issue.
If you're really brave, you can place the drive back into the unit and power it on to ensure the read/write head travels freely across the disc.
Bolt everything back together, hold your breath and cross your fingers.
This should fix the stuck hard drive issue.
Ur all useless wtf
Open it up. fix the connector pin going into the drive. "unclamp" the white plastic that's holding it down then make sure the tape connector is aligned, then clamp it back in. always does the trick for me. this is the third time it's happened and always the same culprit.
Ok im trying to figure out wat firmware to download cause im on linux and i need some help step by step wat to do!
I had the same problem, tried all of the solutions provided on forums and Creative's support page, but nothing seemed to work. When I asked for help from Creative, they denied assistance and offered me to buy a new one. I was obviously pissed, since I had my Zen Vision:M 30GB for a little bit over a year, and the problem occurred during normal usage. I was pissed at first because I thought I had lost all of my music, not knowing that clean-up maintenance was recommended (nothing like that on the manual). Then, I got pissed when I realized that I was stuck with a really expensive paper weight - a disposable and expensive piece of equipment. I got really offended when Creative's people not only confirmed that, but suggested I should get a new one.
What I just did, that solved the problem, was to open up the player to look for anything that seemed unusual. I'm not a technician or anything like that, and had never seen the entrails of a MP3 player before, but the problem was really obvious: the disk had been disconnected. I plugged the tape back into it, turned it on, and all of my music was there. It was a pain in the **** to open it, and reconnect the disk, because of the very small pieces, but the problem was pretty easy to solve. If you don't have a warranty, I highly recommend you try something like this.
My player is a Zen Vision:M, and, to open it, I first popped the little plastic thing on the top (the one around the headphone plug and the ON/OFF button). Then the plastic thing on the bottom. Those little covers hide the only 4 screws I needed to unscrew. Watch out, though, because they are really small, so work on a clean surface, with good light. The tape cable that I connected to the disk is paper thin, so be patient and careful with that as well. When putting everything back together I accidentally disconnected the cable again, so I tried a second time paying much more attention. that was it!
Hope this helps somebody.
It's a shame that we pay for expensive pieces of technology, but are denied the basic information to deal with them.
I'VE TRIED EVRYTHING PLEASE HELP ITS NOT MINE ITS MY BROTHERS !!!!!
I've tried this multiple times to no avail.
I've even put it into a computer running XP Home, SP2, WMP9 and it just keeps seeing it as a Creative Zen, but will not let me reload the Firmware. It just keeps telling me it's disconnected.
The Zen is also listed under Other Devices in Device Manager after I follow your steps.
Do I reload the Zen Drivers, then the Zen Firmware? I have a Zen Touch 20gig. I can't readily find Drivers for it on Zen's site.
Seriously, plug in and load firmware doesn't work, or doesn't explain enough. Please enlighten me.
Thanks.
Try reloading the firmware.
It worked for me thx
Thanks this helped out alot
Yeah me too..... go to creative.com click support, then downloads then find your mp3 player Zen touch of course and it will give you downloads. You need to download the latest firmwire for it on a windows Xp computer then select the 2.XX.XXX firmwire download not the other one because it wont work with windows right. If you need any other stuff like a driver or app. they are also under the downloads are where you looked for the Zen Touch
I would try to update the firmwire.. going to creative.com download one of the firmwires and try to get it on the player... i think, that could work.
Much luck

I have the same exact problem and I haven't the slightest idea what to do. This has never happened before - ever - and I've owned my mp3 player for 2 and half years. It's kind of retarded that Creative doesn't include a troubleshooting section in the manual. HELP!!!!

Can not get zen out of recovery mode
I downloaded the newest firmware for my zen touch and when it was getting upgraded to my piece , my zen screen stays in recovery and when i attach it to the computer no program reads it ( like music jukebox for example) but the computer reads it. and the popout comes up every time I plug it in and the remove hardware device works
I swiched it on, and it was in recovery mode, ive tryed resetting it, rebooting it. Ive also tryed the options on recovery mode. But each time it brings me back to the recovery mode screen.
Yep. I have exactly the same problem. I turned on my Creative Zen today and I have the "Recovery Mode" menu. Tried every option given and nothing works. It won't connect to my computer and resetting doesn't help either. I know I've probably lost all my music by now but I still want to get my MP3 player working again.
Solutions?

STUCK ON THE RECOVER MODE
**** creative is a fuckin **** sucks
SOLVED!! FINALLY!!
I have an old Zen Touch 20gb that i pulled out of my drawer and decided to get running again. I tried to do the 2.xx.xx firmware update from the creative website, but it froze halfway through and was stuck in recovery mode. Every time I tried to update the firmware I kept getting a message saying that I need to reconnect the player, even though my computer recognized that it was plugged in and made the sound. (I was on windows 7). I browsed on forums and sites like this for HOURS over the course of several days. Finally i got it working.
1. Used a different computer with a fresh install of Windows XP (SP3)
2. Installed Windows Media Player 10 from herehttp://www.oldapps.com/windows_media_pla...
3. Restarted computer and plugged in Creative Zen Touch
4. Ran firmware updated 2.xx.xx. FINALLY the button that was locked became unlocked and I proceeded with firmware update
Lesson learned:
Need a Windows XP computer with WMP10 and NO TRACE OF WMP11
Hope this helps anyone who is frustrated with the lack of info on how to fix this stupid problem!!!
