Setting up receive set top box and tv for surround sound

I just bought a Philips Plasma TV (42PFL5332D Model) and would like to set it up with my dvd/receiver and set top box so I can watch TV utilizing the surrond sound speakers in the dvd/receiver. Currently I can watch dvd's in surround sound via the dvd/receiver, however when watching TV the sound only comes out of the TV speakers, not the 5 surround sound speaker. Previously I had a Dell 42 inche plasma tv and had it set up for watching tv in surrond sound, but can't figure out how to set up my Philips plasma to dot he same.

Plug the TV to an open channel on your receiver via this output:
*Rear, 1 x Digital audio output (coaxial) ( TOSLINK )
This will look like a single RCA output plug.
Set that input channel on your receiver to some sort of virtual surround mode because it doesn't look like your HDTV has a decoder in it (meaning it will come out stereo and the receiver will have to fake it).
Turn the volume all the way down on the TV and use the receiver to control TV volume just as you do with DVDs.

*Substitute this with the digital audio output on your set top box if you are sending video only to the TV from the set top box (component, DVI or s-video connections). So video goes to the TV, audio to the receiver.

I have a 42" Philips

That is your Plasma display and would most likely exceed the cost of a new set.

No tv channels with Philips 42FD9935/17

If you are using a Cable Box, then select the Cable Box option in the TV. If you have connected the Antenna directly to the TV, then select the Antenna option in the TV under Menu options. Try performing the Auto program.......If using a Cable Box, then no need to perform the Auto program. If the issue persists, try resetting the TV to the factory settings and check if it helps.

I.ve bought a surround sound set up, which audio output port do i use on the tv cos neither seem to work

This model has two audio outputs. The Monitor out has Video + L and R - L & R are normal stereo and should carry any surround info.
The single RCA Digital audio out must connect to a COAXIAL digital input on the amp.

Digital optical output for technics 5.1 surround sound receiver

I went to the HDTV plasma manual. It stated the only way the digital optical audio output would work (from this TV) was to go to the menu, select audio and turn off the TV speakers. Basically, it had nothing to do with the technics receiver.

Good picture, no sound

Hi, sounds like a Philips flat panel could not find a manual for this model, if you have tried both DVD and cable box and both produce no audio. & check the speaker is turned on in the menu of the TV. then you have a problem in the audio amp circuit of the TV, Philips had a problem with some back in 2003 and it was the SSB board that needed repair or replacement. It may be cheaper to just buy a stereo surround system and run both cable box and DVD straight to the surround system.
sorry could not be of more help.

No surround sound when attaching hdmi to TV

Try running the optical TOSLINK cable from the TV to the receiver. If the TV doen't have a digital optical output, then try going into the menu on your cable box and setting the audio output to the digital optical out. Also check your TV menu and make sure NETCOMMAND is diabled. Some of your newer HDTV have Netcommand that allows the TV to control other devices through the HDMI cable.

Is the volume on the dish network device turned all of the way dowm?

Is the dish network connected to its pwn input on the SS system and did you turn the SS system to that input ?

Are you using the analog input (red and white) cables to the input from the TV to the SS System?, not from the SS box? This is not the correct setup?
