I have a Sharp Carousel Microwave R-1460A. The disk on the ceiling, opposite the warming plate and about the same size, has severe burn marks (probably from food splatters). Any idea what that part is

see this indication and fix it. God bless you
  1. Waveguide coverSparking and arcing in a microwave can be caused by a damaged waveguide cover. Try removing the waveguide cover to see if the problem persists. Once removed, the waveguide cover can be inspected for burns, which will indicate if this is the issue. If the waveguide cover is burnt or will not stay in the proper spot it will need to be replaced.
  2. Cavity/Rack supportIf sparking or arcing in your microwave is near a rack support, any exposed metallic area can be covered with a microwave cavity support. It is also recommended to replace the rack supports in this situation to ensure the issue is resolved.
  3. Cavity paintIf sparking or arcing in the microwave is visible on the side walls, the paint covering the metallic areas could have worn off or chipped. This can possibly cause pitting in the side walls or ceiling. If this is the case, it can be repaired with microwave cavity pain

Is it dangerous to use the microwave without a duct cover

Yes, the waveguide (duct) cover protects the waveguide and the magnetron from damage caused by grease and food particles getting on them.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the area is charred or chipped, the area will first have to be sanded smooth and cleaned and dried thoroughly.

If the cavity metal of the oven is cracked or split, you can use a small amount of steel-based epoxy such as JB-WELD to patch the crack or hole.

Once that dries thoroughly, you can sand it very smooth.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

It provides critical protection for the magnetron.

How do I install a waveguide in a Sharp microwave oven? The old one burned through because of corrosion beneath it. I sanded it & repainted with rust preventative paint. I don't want to break it during...

If you mean the waveguide cover, those are almost always mica or plastic.

They would normally install by sliding them into slots in the cavity or ceiling, and sometimes they are held in pl;ace with a plastic rivet, too.

If a waveguide cover is damaged, it should be replaced with a new one, not repaired in any way.

Arcing will occur, which can damage your magnetron, waveguide, and / or chassis.

If you mean the waveguide itself, which channels the microwave energy from the magnetron to the cooking cavity, that cannot be removed or replaced. They are welded in place. If the waveguide is bad, the oven has to be replaced.

We have quite a few Sharp service manuals which cover disassembly and parts lists, etc. If we have it, I can point you to a link to download it free.

Sharp R-520LK is arcing. Should I just replace the waveguide cover?? I tried cleaning it, but it was like paper and now there's a small hole in it.

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the metal is chipped or charred, the area will first have to be sanded smooth and cleaned and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned or damaged, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.
